I've seen people blowing the skim coat of plaster off with steamers by holding it in one place for too long. I just stick to a bucket and sponge because I'm a tight arse who doesn't want a kettle boiling for hours.
Nice comparison Mac

I am a decorator. Your paper came off easily with sponge and water for two reasons. Firstly the wall had wisely been painted befor hanging the paper - that always makes hanging and stripping easier. Secondly the paper was a duplex vinyl, which has a plastic surface and a wood pulp backing. If you had the misfortune of needing to strip wallpaper from an unpainted wall (or had a very porous paint covering) then a steamer would have saved hours (days) of hard work and frustration, and saved the wall from damage done by overzealous use of a scraper.
I never fight wallpaper when stripping it. If it not coming off easily then either I have not soaked it for long enough, or it's going to need my steamer.

Yours came off incredibly easy. Just know there's some wallpapers 20 plus years old and layered on. It don't matter if I use a steamer bucket etc. No tool will remove it. Except scraping. Sanding and refinishing the drywall.

just had to strip a full lodge of wallpaper we do quite alot of that and sometimes come across stubborn wallpaper sometimes cold water gets it done quicker a steamer can heat up the paste making it a pain to get off hope you have a chilled weekend mac finally got the weekend off just back from working in newcastle cant wait to get to work on monday lol

Filling the steamer from the hot tap cuts boiling time down considerably Mac. Both methods can be a bit dangerous around sockets and switches so I either turn the power off or remove the switch/socket screws and tape plastic bags over them or sometimes I just put tape over the switch and plug socket holes. If you have to use the bucket and sponge method there is an additive you can buy that quickens the paste dissolving process but you have to wear rubber gloves (and I look a right idiot with Marigolds on!)

That steamer is the truth . It saved me time and frustration. Took my border off in 30 mins verses 1 hour 30 mins with vinegar and water . And no nicks in my wall .

I've got an entire kitchen to do, the first layer came off in about 1.5 hours. It's only been on for 23 years. The second layer, I perforated and soaked with water and still have to scrap for every inch. I estimate that it will take 3 weeks to get it off at this rate. I can rent a steamer wallpaper remover for $32 for 2 days over the weekend. That will be happening this coming weekend.
