When it’s so close to being finished, you’re SOPHIE’s lifelong collaborator and brother, and you were working on the album with Sophie while Sophie was alive, I think you have the right to release the album.

Only if it was at least 80% finished before the artist’s passing.

I think a lot of people are misinterpreting this comment, but I just wanted to say that I don’t even know if I personally agree with posthumous records as a concept. What I mean is if you HAVE to do one, it should be to the point of completion where you only need to tune the finer details.

Only if they are done right while respecting the artist’s legacy and original vision for example: Circles by Mac Miller and Shoot For The Stars Aim For The Moon by Pop Smoke

From record labels, no. From family members like johnny cash go right ahead

I think you get ONE. When you pull out a second posthumous album its like nah, this is like 80% made by other people, without the artists input.

This topic deserved a whole Fantano video, not a short

I immediately thought of Circles when reading about the process behind this new posthumous release. I have no doubt that SOPHIE’s final album will be treated with the same level of care and respect.

When I think of a posthumous album done well Elliott Smith’s From a Basement on a Hill always comes to mind. They can be done well but those songs were mostly finished and went right to the producer he was working with.

I remember that Eminem wanted to produce à Tupac album and he had the class to write à letter to his mother Afini Shakur asking him that favor

Depends on intent and context. If the albums were mostly done right before death, then they can be released as an LP as long as there is minimal editing. If everything is rough, then it's probably best to include it in a compilation album or an "official" bootleg.

J Dilla had some decent posthumous albums, dillatronic comes to mind

I cannot fathom what From A Basement On A Hill would sound like if Elliott would have finished it. The new direction and depressive yet playful cuts could have been mind blowing. We can’t even be sure if the songs are finished. The song Abused might have been on there, and the production would probably have been different. Maybe he would have wanted to rerecord some takes. But it’s also that rawness that makes it one of his best.

I actually don’t mind posthumous albums. Some of my favorite stuff from Jeff Buckley were released posthumously. Usually artists who stay alive release all their outtakes and “lost” stuff when they get old (like Bob Dylan’s bootleg series). Plus artists love people hearing their art, even if they are just sketches and unfinished paintings

One of my favourite posthumous albums is Skethes for my Sweetheart the Drunk, and that happened to have my favourite Jeff Buckley song on it woth a lot of covers and rough drafts and a hidden track Gunshot Glitter on it. Chris Cornell came in to help with the arrangement of the songs, so there was care with its release.

Shoot for the stars aim for the moon was great

Only if the album is literally like almost done. Like as in only needs to be mastered basically, anything else is bad.

DMX and Mac Miller had good posthumous releases

I'm not a music snob or something like that but I feel the same way, it's ok if the artist was already working on it before their deaths and the album is being "organized" by people who knew them and understood their style and artistic process

It depends on whos doing it. Low Roar is getting a post humous album but its being finished by Andrew Scheps who was really close to Ryan and understood his artistry

An example of doing it right was the cranberries. They finished the songs Deloris was working on, and made a wonderful album
