In Washington, the record is 120k in one season, fishing the northern pike minnow. Starts out at 6 bucks a fish and goes up to 10 at 200 fish.

It’s important to make the distinction between northern pikeminnow and other types of pikeminnow. There are many species of Pikeminnow, that are native, beneficial, and even endangered. Where I live, we have a species called the Sacramento pikeminnow That people often kill out of ignorance, and there isn’t even a reward program for them. They are unique and important native predators, and it makes me sad that people hate them so much. People need to understand that it is never illegal to release native fish.

Does that first fish have teeth? This is really important information.

Pikeminnow are NATIVE to Oregon and Washington within the Columbia river and its tributaries, where the bounty exists. The bounty is paid by Bonneville Power Administration. Nowhere does it say in the regulations you are REQUIRED to kill them. The bounty is paid as another collateral for impacts of the dams operations on the river. Dams create slower flows which allow Pikeminnow, a voracious predator of salmon smolts, to thrive. Do not kill and waste fish because you feel you are doing a service. Keep them, bring them home, put them in the garden, the garbage can, use them for crawdad bait, but please keep them off the river banks. Nobody likes to see random dead fish in public areas. P.S. they put up one heck of a fight!

The top earners for the Columbia River pikeminnow program is into the 6 figures. You get 8 dollars per fish you catch.
Also, northern pikeminnow are actually a native species in Washington and Oregon. However, the dams on the Columbia River created an environment which causes them to become grossly overpopulated. This poses a significant risk to struggling salmon and steelhead stocks, as each individual fish consumes large portions of juvenile salmonids.

Grew up in Oregon. Pike minnow is a fun way to pass time but some guys make it an art form.

When I was younger I would go fishing in the Columbia river in the summer.

I would use cheddar cheese, they love it 😅

It was nice being 12 years old and then getting a check In the mail. 30-40 dollars was a lot for me back then 😂

I am in Oregon. And an avid fisherman. The northern pikeminnow is actually native to Oregon however because of all the dams we built on the Columbia and the damage we did to the salmon they have increased dramatically and eat up a lot of the salmon fry. And so Bonneville has put out a bounty for the northern pikeminnow. But only in the Columbia nowhere else in Oregon. Because they are native species. Everybody seems to get that wrong or not realize it but we are putting a bounty on a native species because of our mistakes

People mistake those so much for pike minnow here in Oregon it’s sad. They do kinda look alike but mouths are completely different. But still people kill them simply by miss identifying them.

It’s really funny considering northern pikeminnow are native to Washington, it’s just a desperate attempt the save the salmon fry. But the non-native smallmouth bass and walleye are totally okay even though they are predatory species. Makes sense.

I'm South African and I once went on a trip (going there again this year) to the Cederberg for conservation. There are invasive fish there like bass and bluegill that threaten the biodiversity of the area, including the endemic Clanwilliam Sandfish. Essentially, we just put the baby sandfish in buckets and brought them to a dam where they could grow up safely, but we came across some bluegills too. It was cool
