CHASING A GHOST: I BROKE MY 3 POINT HITCH! IT DOESN'T WORK! 😭

We got our John Deere 4720 out to the property and were excited to throw our Dirt Dog 84" Box Blade on the three-point and clear out some debris. But we didn't get very far before we ran into a problem. And we'll tell you all about it.

I had something similar happen on my Kubota 4760 a couple of weeks ago. Using a grapple and grapple quit working, loader up/down quit working, 3 point worked but really slow. It turned out the spool valve in the 3rd function stuck open relieving pressure and volume of oil back to the rear end of the tractor. I could hear a screeching sound like restricted hydraulics makes and the lines from 3rd function were very hot. I disconnected 3rd function lines from loader block and also disconnected the wiring plugs to 3rd function solenoid and loader and 3 point started working again. Dealer disassembled 3rd function valve and found plastic debris clogging up the ports on the spool valve.

Low voltage and battery issues can wreak havoc on modern complex equipment. You mentioned you had battery issues… just a thought that it could be a battery or alternator issue, especially given the intermittent Nature of the problem.

May seem silly, but is the hydraulic fluid reservoir full? It's the only thing that seems common to all circuits.
Heat an issue that didn't show up when the dealer tried it on a cool morning?

Weird 👻... good luck, can’t wait to see the bat wing in action 🙋🏼‍♂️👍🏻

I had a similar issue and thought I would have to call the dealer to pick up my tractor. I found another video on youtube that talked about the rear remote with a detent (I think that's what it's called) Turns out I had bumped that remote lever and it was stuck on not letting any of the other rear hydraulic things work. Couldn't lift the 3-point or anything. Pulled the lever to the middle and problem was solved. I love YouTube and people like you who put the info out there. Looking forward to your "solution"

Sticking solenoid, possibly the top link circuit, low voltage Gremlins. Solve the charging issue first!

Great informative video. Sorry that it broke. Thank you for the heads up on not pushing piles higher and higher. Have a great day and be safe guys. Tim

One commonality on all of those systems is they are all electrically controlled. Time to check battery health, charging system, and all the grounds.

Master C I agree that it seens like you have a sticky rear remote spool. Not sure how your big boy is plumbed between the 3PH control valve and rear remote control valve but on my tractor if the rear remotes are in use the 3PH cannot be raised. The rear remote control valve has the priority. Can't wait to see what they find.

I will say this if the rear remote was not used for awhile the spool can get sticky but that usually takes a long time. I would think you would not fit that profile.

Have seen this, Air got op top of the internal lift ram seal. Bleeds away and works. Probably need to take the rock shaft apart and re seal. Good luck!

Yep, I'm now a subscriber. Good luck with your 3 point issue. Keep us in the loop.

Thanks for sharing I hope they find your problem with your tractor I appreciate the videos

I do that constantly on my old 1967 Ford 2000 when clearing brush and never had a problem. Might a color of the paint issue lol

No familure with that style rock shaft but from what i can see there is usually a valve inside the housing, linkage pushes on a rod with a spring return behind it, when the rock shaft is to be raised and it hits the top position that rod is pushed in against the spring and starts dumping the oil flow to tank to stop it and hold it in a neuatral position at the top of its stroke, when you let the lever down it lets the rod stroke all the way out and lets the oil in the rock shaft dump to take to lower it, the middle area of the rod travel is neutral and holds at your depth controll, my guess would be when you ran it up so high that spring got bound up or the rod deflected/bent enough to get stuck in one of these positions, this could cause unwanted pressure between the pump and rock shaft that caused some things to work fine and some to not, and after the rock shaft you had zero flow because it was being dumped to tank and not sent on down the line to the next attachment.

Those R14s look great on that tractor!! I sold my 3038E, about to pull the trigger on a 4052M and I’d really like to get the R14 tires to try out

Wow! Very frustrating situation. I’ve been down those roads numerous times. Ughhhh!!

Relief valve stuck open? Popped it when you went too high and it stuck causing loss of the other circuits? Then it closed when things cooled off?

I am going to guess that everything that quit is electric over hydraulic. I wonder if there is a harness where all the things that stopped are together and the wires are chafing.

Sounds like a valve stuck, diverting all the pressure, possibly caused by the low voltage. Hydraulics are in series, starting with the steering, then loader, then remotes, ending with the 3pt, so any problem"upstream", the 3pt won't work.

Good to hear no problem, but it really doesn't help with out the Why. Maybe the fluid cooling off or the road trip jostled linkage.
