Bay Area shoppers weigh in on Gov. Newsom's plastic-bag ban

Veronica Macias reports on how Bay Area residents are reacting to the newly signed bill that will ban single-use plastic bags starting in 2026.

Almost everything you buy is in a plastic bag or plastic container . But the plastic bag to carry all the plastic is banned .. there is just something stupid about this

Most people probably have reuseable bags but just forget to bring it inside the store. They should put signs in the parking lot or something reminding you to bring it.

Some people may resort to creatively using doubled-up bags from the produce section. l am still going to buy a supply of plastic bags to line the garbage cans when the ban begins. Some stores make the shopper bag their purchase when they bring their own bags if the shopper doesn't op to pay for the store's plastic bag. Guess what happens.

So when are they going to ban plastic covering everything everywhere and plastic trash bags? Most people i know would reuse those free plastic bags as trash bags and for other purposes. Now theres more plastic than ever.
A law that prohibits excess packaging, where its plastic, styrofoam or anything else is more sensible. Plastic bagged/covered goods with each piece inside also enclosed in plastic is absurd. This law does little if anything to curb the output of plastic.

We have the highest cost of living in the Bay area. We have the highest utility cost on the planet. Everything in my local grocery store is locked up because of crime. But our governor wants to ban plastic bag. 😂😂😂😂

The result is that stores are going to charge even more for bags, paper production will go up, plastic garbage bags production will sky rocket. Old people and people that walk will have more trouble getting their groceries home.

There are bigger and much more important issues to deal with in california than banning bags. Non of those real issues will be solved. But hey at least people can feel good using a paper bag after spending hundreds more on groceries than a few years ago. Sad.

I was walking with my Safeway paper shopping bag and the fog in San Francisco thickened. The paper bag melted and my groceries ended up in the sidewalk. I’m sure the governor lets the CHP do his groceries.

During the last couple of years I've been really bad by using plastic bags at the grocery store. It doesn't help that grocery stores make plastic bags available. The 10 cents (or whatever it cost per bag) never deterred me from using plastic bags. And, why aren't paper bags available instead? But, anyway . . . I'll have to get back into the habit of bringing reusable bags with me to the grocery store.
