America’s ambitious plan to restore the Wild West

North America's vast grasslands were once full of thriving wildlife, stretching endlessly across the horizon. But overhunting and farming led to the decline of many species. Much of the land was turned into cattle farms, forever changing the landscape and taking away its natural beauty.

In our 19th Planet Wild mission, we're helping restore America's farmland to its wild origins. By reintroducing iconic species like bison and pronghorns, we’re helping them reclaim their rightful place on the plains.

Once while driving south to north in Wyoming a large Pronghorn stood on a rock cut along the highway. 40 years later I can still visualize the majesty of that one animal.

As an American who also loves tales of the Old West, I am so thankful and happy to see this! The people banning together and taking back the land, to return to the wildlife, for the benefit of us all--what an incredible concept.

Yes! Planet wild in my own country! Can American Prairies also plant native milkweed for our declining Monarch Butterfly population?

I live in Colorado, and we have a “open land” concept that has been around for a few decades. We bought property in El Paso County yrs ago, and decided to keep it as natural as possible. Only a large shed (we call a cabin😂), small septic tank, and a hand pump well. Our neighbors all 3 live off grid on similar properties. Our largest neighbor is a dude ranch, and they took down fencing on 16 miles that included our property boarders. They have a large herd of 200+ Buffalo. We also see frequent wild burros. Since the fence was removed in our area (2016-17?) the Pronghorn Antelope, Buffalo, Mule Deer, Wild Burros, Elk, and of course the smaller animals are all coming back. The Western US is an amazing place.

Thank you for making more people aware of how vitally important grasslands are as natural habitats. I read once that in India they consider it a wasteland and don’t bother protecting it which is very sad. That was the case here in America for a while too, but thankfully because of efforts like this that’s starting to change.

American Prairie is incredible and the work to restore natural grassland and the species to live and thrive is exciting. I fully support this!

I am a life long Wyomingite I live in the southwest part of the state, we still get Pronghorn or Antelope migrating though out town ever now and then, its so special to see! I love to hear about organizations like American Prairie and it is now a life goal of mine to give something back to this ecology that I have been intertwined all my years. Sign me up, I would love to join and help this organization! I love the animals featured in the vid but Prairie Dog are the best, and I would love to help restore their numbers, remove old fences, and see native species run free out here!

I worked for 2 seasons on Wyoming's Thunder Basin National Grassland. 45 years later I hold a nostalga for the open expansees.
This was when the black footed ferret was found to be not extint amd we spent several nights in prairie dog towns hoping to spot one pn the hunt, as they eat prairie dogs almost exclusivly.
Good times!

This is such an important project. It breaks my heart what the early European American settlers did to the Native Americans by destroying their land, the animals, and the habitats on which they lived. One early European traveler remarked that the gardens of the Native American people were far and away more beautiful than the finest gardens of London. Native American people were and are experts in caring for the land. I hope that this project will bring awareness and support, hopefully someday allowing people like the Plains Indians to regain some of their original ways of living. A thriving environment means thriving people.

This is very similar to the project from Siberia called "Pleistocene Park", Sergey Zimov and his son have been restoring a biome called Tundra Steppe for 30 years, only you have an even bigger scale, and you have achieved great success. But I wish you and the Pleistocene Park good luck in fulfilling your missions.

The efforts to restore the land thrill me, but the restoration must (in my opinion) begin with the capture of rainwater in the watersheds, making it more available to the wildlife. The restoration of wetlands is vital to the recovery of the land.
