As an asian, i didnt realise traffic light countdowns arent common (probably more common in asia/europe??). Here in Malaysia, our traffic light countdowns are connected to the side of the red light and it'll count from 60s like a timer for both red and green light

Some of the new Audis have a feature where they seamlessly synch up with traffic lights to let you know how long until it turns green which is super cool. They also automatically suggest speeds while you're driving to avoid upcoming red lights in order to hit the green light

We had countdown timers for traffic in one city and it led to a bike accident... So they changed the timers to regular clocks.

The idea isn't bad but it is dangerous to implement in an impatient society

Edit: this happened because the oncoming traffic doesn't immediately stop on a red, while those waiting for green try to rush as soon as it turns green, when there is a timer, they will know earlier when it will turn to green and start going earlier, this led to bridging the gap between one road's light turning red and the other's turning green, which is probably what caused the accident

In a city next to the capital there's 7-segment countdown displays that have nothing in common with the South Korean design, but they do the same thing. I was wondering why it's not anywhere else and I can't find a reason other than money.

None of these are 'genius'. Most are just mildly interesting at best.

India literally has a countdown timer, as in a digital seconds timer so people can switch off their engines. Very effective

Well that traffic light countdown is a common thing where I live. We have not just blinkers but proper countdown for reach light so people wont go impatient. It is actually very helpful.

I'm an electrical engineer and let me tell you, the rambler socket is a very dangerous idea. It sounds good in theory, but generally things with electricity are always the way they are for a reason and if this worked we would have made it a thing by now. Sockets like this and those extension cables that come on rolls are a fore hazard because they are basically huge inductors which can cause a massive surge of current when the supply is turned off which can easily melt the wires and start a fire in some cases.

That rambler socket is a fire Hazard, because not everyone knows that's Copper coils produce heat and also even with no current running through. It but it's minimal.

Countdowns on traffic lights and railway crossings should be in every country.
