I like Blender but I prefer ZBrush for sculpting. I think I am gonna stay with current stable version for the rest of my life, just to avoid getting myself into that subscription trap.

I was naive thinking that at very least first update under Maxon will be strong to hook people up. Apparently they are too greedy even for that.

Honestly there’s a very short list of new things they could add that’d make me want to upgrade, like a lot of other people I’ve been a perpetual license holder for about a decade, and the last major feature that I use a lot is Zmodeler, updates have mostly been small improvements that felt like a fun treat each year that I’d get excited to play around with but now it just reminds me how I need to look at alternatives. I feel like if they over hauled their UV editor, improved fibermesh/ had a better hair solution like Xgen, added rigging tools and painting weights, I’d consider upgrading, but it’d need to be better than my current solutions and I’m honestly not sure I see that happening. I used to recommend Zbrush confidently when people took an interest in getting into 3D art, but I just don’t feel comfortable doing that anymore. I’m overall just not very hopeful about the future of Zbrush with Maxon at the wheel.

Hey man, nice video. As most people say I am not excited about the price for an upgrade, the features are really weak - but to be honest for quite a few years we had been getting free upgrades from Pixologic I was always asking myself would I pay for X and generally the answer was no, majority of the features are nice and cool but they are not game changing personally for me I understand everyone's workflows are different. I think Zbrush is amazing from the moment they had dynamesh/zremesh/Uv layout features the rest is just a bonus :). So I see myself quite comfortable sitting on 2022 version untill I see something substantial (UDIMs, better texturing tools, redo cluttered hardsuface tools, once they actually integrate redshift without the need to pay for the subscription) this is when I would take a notice. I guess the biggest question what will they do to make Zbrush not work on either win10-win11 going forward.

Awesome video mate !!
Have a question... I have a perpetual license of Zbrush for some years now, Currentely on 2022 version... if I upgrade the software with ZUpgrader I still will be able to use my perpetual license or will have to pay the subscription ??
Maybe my question is a little bit silly but I really don't know and don´t want to screw it up hahahah

Ditto... I'm glad somebody came out and said it ;) Thanks. What will happen to us perpetual license users going forward? Does ZBrush work in Windows 11 (i don't know, I'm just asking). But I see a time when us older perpetual license holders are gonna be forgotten and it won't work anymore!!? I did notice we could upgrade for a one off fee of $659 dollars. Yes, that's $659... i did not mistype. Considering I paid $899 dollars for the entire software, $659 for a few weak features don't cut it. Like you, I don't care about Redshift. I feel like I'm slowly losing an old :( Paul Gaboury use to be so funny when he did presentations, and they were good. It feels like the soul has been sucked out of him now, but he's gotta do them because he's contractually obliged to do it. It's so obvious.

Great video, sir. I've been a LONG TIME ZBrush user and the price to upgrade a perpetual license is very steep compared to how much I paid for it in 2006 (it cost around $500 if I remember correctly) and I'm not going for it.

Now if Pixologic we're still independent, I would not mind at all paying for upgrades, especially since they've been giving us free upgrades over the years. And the releases were stellar.

This release...meh.

Really Zbrush 2021.7 was the apex in upgrade curve of Zbrush. Maybe are in deadway and its SO hard to evolve the tool with the old UI and core build. I dont know, but no reason to get into Maxon tentacles... by now, of course. I hope be wrong.

I thought for sure with 2023 we were going to see
1. A new simpler UI option for beginners to attract more users
2. More of an update between zbrush & forger for tablets
3. Some form of basic VR integration

I honestly think #1 will be coming in 2023… sort of beginner vs intermediate vs advanced layout options

Yes also have a perpetual ZB. To be honest there isn't much more that I can think of that would entice me into upgrades into subscription. Also have Keyshot and with Blender / Unreal 5 there needs to be A LOT these companies need to come up with to grab consumers. I'm also glad I bought the 3D Coat perpetual when it was first out. Maxon needs to have something substantial and I'm simply not seeing any reason to run to them. Maybe big corporations may see the advantage, but I think the lower end consumer will just keep ticking along with their ZB 2022.

as a solo dev where I'm leaning more to zbrush would I be better off with an annual plan instead of perpetual?

Does zbrush core have cloth simulation or is that still only a zbrush function at the moment?

considering that most people use zbrush with a tablet/pen I really wish zbrush would take some ui interaction ideas from apps like procreate. I dont want them to water down zbrush but I really hate having to grab those little fiddly sliders to change brush size, scroll up and down subtool list, etc.

Yea looks like they are trying to slowly build reasons to get the subscription. From the looks of it the future updates of zbrush is no longer a standalone tool they will be adding things to where you will need the subscription to actually benefit from it. Good news is I have everything I need in 2022. But if they dont step it up in the next year or 2 the user base will decrease as blender and 3d coat become more attractive

The masking update sorta reminds me of procreate paint fill
