As a history buff who enjoys the lore/history/geography more than anything else about these kinds of games, this is EXACTLY the kind of video I needed.

New Austin: Texas/Arizona/New Mexico/Nevada. West Elizabeth: Oklahoma, California, a little bit of the rockies. Ambarino: Colorado, Wyoming, Montana, South Dakota. New Hanover: more Colorado and Wyoming, with a hint of Nebraska. Lemoyne: Missouri, Arkansas, Mississippi, Louisiana. I can’t remember which state the northeast part of the map is in, but it’s definitely Tennessee/Appalachian regions.

Ambirino looks like Wyoming, it even has geysers and hot springs.

Minor Spoiler Alert (not a main story spoiler)...

In the Epilogue if you buy the newspapers you can read an article that says Cornwall Oil found only a minuscule amount of oil in the Wapiti reservation area and abandoned the drill site a few years after the tribe fled north.

Nice overview! It does get even more specific... I'm a geology nerd, so I was stunned at how well places in the game match up to real life places. The Big Valley area is the Canadian Rocky Mountains, like you'd see in Montana's Glacier National Park and further north. Grizzlies West is more like the American Rockies of Colorado, and Grizzlies East is more like the Sierra Nevada mountains like in California's Yosemite National Park. Cotorra Springs is Yellowstone National Park. The Heartlands are the Midwest, and even cooler, the Dakota River Valley was clearly once a glacial lake during the Ice Age. Those silt cliffs along the river are a telltale sign. Scarlett Meadows is the American South, the red earth resembling that of Georgia. Roanoke Ridge is more or less Virginia and New England, into the Catskills and Appalachians. Annesburg is basically the coal region, like Pittsburgh.

Most of New Austin is more similar to New Mexico and Arizona. I think it represents a mixture of AZ, NM and TX

"It's resoundingly Texan..."

Well, no. It's covered in sajuaro. Sajuaro cacti are endemic to the Sanoran desert, which is in Arizona ONLY in the US. There are no sajuaro in Texas.

The whole area around the Indian rese is meant to be Yellowstone. The hot springs are the most obvious pointer, but the waterfalls near there also look strikingly similar to Yellowstone falls. Not to forget the Shoshone and Sioux Indian tribes both resided there at some point (even if just for a few months before the battle of little big horn).
