An Introduction to Agnes Martin

Curator Tracey Bashkoff introduces Agnes Martin, the first comprehensive survey of the artist’s work since her death in 2004. On view at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum October 7, 2016–January 11, 2017, the exhibition traces Martin’s career from her early experiments of the 1950s through her mature oeuvre and final paintings. Visitors will have an opportunity to explore the artist’s subtle and evocative striped paintings and her signature grid-pattern works, which were influenced by Asian belief systems including Taoism and Zen Buddhism. Martin’s restrained style was underpinned by a personal conviction in the emotive and expressive power of art.
