J. Erik Loehr, Ph.D., P.E., Logan Professor in the College of Engineering at the University of Missouri and a senior principal engineer with Dan Brown and Associates, presented the DFI Osterberg Memorial Lecture at the International Foundations Congress and Equipment Exposition (IFCEE 2021) in Dallas, Texas, May 10–14, 2021.

The lecture, “The Considerable Benefits of Bi-directional Loading,” looks at the benefits from the adoption and widespread use of the “Osterberg cell” for bi-directional load tests, and how bi-directional load testing has dramatically increased the loading capacity that can be practically delivered for routine testing, which in turn has increased the frequency of testing for both research and project-specific purposes.
