It was a monumental engineering feat. It cost a huge amount of money. It ultimately was too little too late. Mine owners blocked in every way they could the building of it even though it would make the mines much safer and drier. They didn’t want to pay a royalty to Sutro for the ore taken out through the tunnel. By the time the tunnel was usable the mines were beginning to play out and 6 years later they stopped pumping out the mines on the levels below the Sutro tunnel due to no sufficient returns for the expenses of mining. The Big Bonanza was over the the area declined down to only a few hundred living in Virginia City and Gold Hill where once there had been thousands.

I was there in 69 and everything was open but the tunnel. There was a bar there that we stopped and had some beers. What happened to it?
