you could also simplify the denominator using the cosine addition formula and graph knowledge to get a = [d * sin(beta) * sin(alpha) ] / [ sin(beta - alpha) ] which is nice

rather than using phi to solve for n since you were never given angle phi, you could find out the adjacent side of the first triangle first. you do that by using alpha and d of the first triangle to get d(cos(alpha)) which is your adjacent side. now, subtract that from C to get the opposite side of the long skinny triangle, call that side M. now that you have the opposite side of the skinny triangle, M, as well as the the adjacent side, e, you can use pythagorean theorem to solve for the hypotenuse n.
