Bucharest is a city and municipality, the capital of Romania, the economic, administrative, and cultural centre of the country. It lies in the middle of the Romanian Plain, on the banks of the Dâmbovița River, a small northern tributary of the Danube. The river is lined by boulevards with walkways along its banks and flows through the central Bucharest, the Old Town, one of the most beloved and attractive areas in Bucharest.
CEC Palace in Bucharest, Romania was built between 8 June 1897 and 1900, in eclectic style following the project of a French architect, Paul Gottereau while a Romanian architect, Ion Socolescu was in charge of executing the works. The beautiful architectural elements include 5 domes, a central one, made out of glass and metal, and another four domes in the corners of the Palace. The entrance is beautifully decorated by an arch supported by two pairs of columns in composite style.
Bucharest City Hall is housed in a beautiful building built between 1906 and 1910, in a traditional, neo-Romanian style, located opposite the Cișmigiu Gardens. Cismigiu is a public garden, located in the heart of Bucharest, first designed and laid out in 1845 by the German landscape architect Carl Meyer and completed in 1860. It is a lovely place to spend time in the 17-hectare garden between plants brought from the Romanian mountains and exotic plants fetched from the botanical gardens in Vienna. There is a lake also, which can be explored by rowing boat in summer or skated upon during the winter. The Monument of French Heroes in Carrara marble, made by the Romanian sculptor Ion Jalea, commemorates French troops killed on Romanian territory during World War I.
Gheorghe Lazăr National College is the second oldest high school in Bucharest located at the southeast corner of the Cișmigiu Gardens, in the center of the capital city. The prestigious secondary education institution in Romania was founed in 1860. On May 20th1890, King Carol I signed the decree for a new establishment of the high school, near Cişmigiu Gardens. The new sober and elegant building was inaugurated in the autumn of 1890. The beautiful construction combines several architectural styles from Brâncovenesc to the Neoclassical English style.
