I use a Robertson driver to retrieve stripped Philips screws in a pinch

Philips was supposedly designed to cam out at a certain torque and it achieves this by stripping the head/bit.

And all Canadians who use screwdrivers are that much more grateful to be Canadian. There's no frustration like a Phillips screw falling off the end of the screwdriver, or a flathead screwdriver slipping out of the slot.

Basically every house in Canada is now built with robertson screws. For hand driving screws it works a lot better as you don't need a ton of feed pressure to keep it from climbing out of the slot and stripping like a phillips. But a phillips is better for machine work as it's self centering.

I much prefer the Robertson! Doesn’t strip out the head so easily

I like the Robertson because they rarely strip out,
& easy to get a driver bit into at arms length!
Play carefully, & smile often!

Irony is the square drive is better than Phillips
Edit Didn't know this would happen but it seems that people agree with me about square drive. As for Torx drive, not fond.
I do like Tek screws though.

Where did the idea of the screwdriver originate from?
Phillip's Head.

A screwdriver walks into a bar
The bartender says! “Hey, we’ve got a drink named after you.”
The screwdriver says, “You’ve got a drink named Philip?”

Hmm, the Robertson is like the hardie backerboard screws, has a square. I prefer that for construction related purposes, vs stupid Philips which strips way too easily.

We have a Fleetwood rv factory and a few mobile homes factories I can tell you for the last 40 + years those factories especially fleetwood used the square drive screws more than anything else

Great short.

Growing up with them, makes it odd imagining life without them. In my experience, I do prefer robertsons over philips for the grip. I tend to be cautious when tightening fastners, so I imagine that contributes to my opinion.

I'll take a robertson any day. I've never had one strip out on me.

So I have, i guess, a phobia of specifically countersunk wood screws. The absolute worst being rusty countersunk Phillips, or flathead, screwheads. I literally can't even bear to look at them sticking out of fittings! 😅 Bolt beads, on the other hand, are just fine! Every screw in my house has to be either doomed, or internal hex These Canadian screws would be heaven for me!

Same thing happened to the Sea Sled.inventor held out till they designed around him with the tri-hull. Too bad because his design was so much better for heavy sea keeping.
