What should you really do when you get stuck there and you don’t know what to say while speaking English? If you forget the words in the middle of speaking, here are some tips you can do:
1. Describe the word
• When you don’t remember what exactly that word is, describe it!
2. Use body language
• When you talk with someone, they are not just focused on the meaning of what you are saying, your body language also affects them – the way you move, your gestures, your facial expressions. So, you can also do this if you forget a word in English...
3. Use expressions like “what do you call that?”, “what’s it called?” “sort of”, “kind of”
• These are some common expressions that you can use to fill in the missing word.
• Most of my students use the expressions “what do you call that” “what's it called” when they don't remember the words that they want to use as they speak English. And I help them to access the word, so they can remember what they want to say.
4. Use your native language
• This could be your last resort. It means that if you don’t really have a choice, use your native language to say that word
• This could be one way to help you access the word that you want to say in English. But of course, you may not want to overdo it.
