Affordable and reliable energy is critical for Australia’s future prosperity | Ted O’Brien MP

At the Institute of Public Affairs’ Adelaide Members Event, federal Shadow Minister for Climate Change and Energy, Ted O’Brien MP, delivered an important address on the future of our nation’s energy system, energy security and the current, unacceptably high costs families and businesses face.

Mr O’Brien warned attendees that if Australia was to continue down the path set by the federal government, that by mid-century we will be a poor, weak nation, dependent on foreign powers for our energy sources – whose interests and values, in many cases, are not our own.

Mr O’Brien expanded on his policy vision of including nuclear generation as part of Australia’s energy future and announced plans to foster value-adding to the front-end of the nuclear fuel cycle through domestic uranium enrichment.

And the IPA can host a presentation like this because we are an independent research organisation supported by more than 9,000 members across Australia.

It's true. Australia's wealth is trickling away. We were once the lucky country. Not any more . .

Some really great speeches here. I plan to sit with my buddy and show him this superb edition of IPA. One small issue, regarding our national security: of course energy security is paramount, in my opinion.
I don't want my youngsters growing up with any hint of Islam in Australia because they will destroy our nation from within. Another problem? Probably bigger than energy supply.

All of these options for energy, require 5 X more mining than coal. Why are we doing anything at all. Our country is already energy efficient, with 0.001 percent of world emissions!!

Over the last 30 years, we have allowed manufacturing to decline from 14% of GDP to 5%.
The popularity of Engineering as a profession continues to increase for foreign students, and decrease for Australian students.
Building a domestic nuclear industry in Australia to replace base load fossil fuel generators will require 30+ years, and then it likely won't have any work for the next 50 years.
Politicising major infrastructure decisions is a bad idea - we don't need to repeat the nbn fiasco.
Removing the ban on nuclear power, and ensuring market regulation drives government policy objectives, will allow the market to find an optimal mix of technologies for the transition to net zero.

We shouldn’t have solar and wind at all in this country except in very remote areas as we have heaps of resources. We have also have more than enough expertise but are held back by government without vision. You would have to say this is being controlled higher up the chain.

It’s not like we’ve got coal, uranium, natural gas, sunlight, wind or a huge coastline with great waves… hang on??

Many people who have never done anything really hazardous have suddenly become experts. In my life there are 3 little girls who scream, and I cannot stand the noise which happens when V8 supercars change gear. Where I worked, there was always the possibility of the side of the building being blown-in by an explosion. Those two noises were what I dreaded. They make me feel sick.
