Ep. 148 ST. LUKE MOSAIC PROGRESS, THE TWO HEARTS MOSAIC & A FIELD TRIP TO ANGIE'S ART GLASS SHOP!

0:07 St. Luke's head is cut off using an exacto knife and several passes. Then my handy mini crow bar is used to pry it off the shelf paper.
0:51 St. Luke's neck is added in grayish tones, then the shoulders are added with browns.
1:39 I pre-cut the glass for the words on the banner. Then spread a bed of thinset and position the pieces, making sure to seat each one. Each element is outlined with black so it will read from a distance as it will be installed on the second story on the exterior of a church. The background behind the letters goes rather quickly.
4:06 Switching to my other workbench, there are a few key elements that need to be added to the Two Hearts mosaic commission. The first is a cross, then a lily, and a sword. I show a photo of a similar Two Hearts mosaic I made a while back. There will be some changes - such as switching the position of the hearts, making a thicker crown of thorns, etc. The roses are more staggered in the new commission also.
6:19 Once the elements are in place, I add the flames on both, using one type of orange glass that has some beautiful variegations in it.
6:47 I finish the banner on St. Luke!!! For this last part, I place the letters first, then clean up excess thinsset and carefully add the background. It gets a bit messy, but I can't clean it up until the thinset has set up so my pieces don't squish around.
Then I show how a viewer's tip to separate my sections with plastic wrap is working out! It means I don't have to be super careful when laying in adjacent sections.
9:30 FIELD TRIP TIME! I'm visiting relatives in Florida and found a little stained glass shop that is not too far from us. I take you inside and show what is available. Whenever and where ever I road trip, it is a good opportunity to seek glass shops to see the glass in person and avoid glass packing and shipping fees!
11:07 I show some of the glass that I purchased at the shop, both for my personal use and glass purchased for my students to use.
13:50 Fun times. I locked the keys in the trunk and we waited about 5 hours to get the keys out! Fortunately it didn't effect our travel plans, as we drove home the next day. More of an inconvenience overall! Whew.
That's Putting It Together, Ep. 148. Thanks for watching! See you next time.
Finally, I clean up my messy thinset on top of the St. Luke banner!
