This nest is located in Peabody, Kansas. Thank you, Farmer Derek, for the live cams, allowing us to observe wildlife on the farm, and Bonnie & Clyde, Great Horned Owls ❗️

➡️ ➡️ Note: The precious chick in egg #2 did not survive the hatching process, 3-12-25 and 3-13-25 💔. This video coverage is for late evening on 3-11-25, and for 3-12-25; additional coverage to follow.

Video opens with Clyde delivering prey. He moves closer when Bonnie does not fly down initially. Bonnie flies down, but apparently Clyde had moved again. Clyde arrives on the nest with the prey, and Bonnie flies in to receive it. The next segment is Bonnie taking a break, allowing for a view of owlet #1 and egg #2. The Zoom function on the cam is not working, so I added editing zoom views for this video. Clyde delivers another prey item, this time bringing the prey to Bonnie on the nest.

Later, Bonnie rises for a break. As she rises, we can see one of her talons is in egg #2, and the egg is stuck to Bonnie's foot. Bonnie flaps her wings for balance as she is moving out of the nest cup, and egg #2 falls back into the nest. An editing zoom view follows. Bonnie returns and incubates/broods.

The next interaction has Bonnie rising and interacting with egg #2. She appears to be "cleaning" the egg, either removing prey remains off the outside of the shell, or possibly whatever may have leaked from the openings in the egg shell. The view is not clear enough to determine which. Bonnie eats again, and I believe this is from prey cached in her nest. Bonnie moves egg #2 with her bill. The egg rolls back toward her, and Bonnie resumes incubating/brooding. Time stamps below, if interested.

I'm thinking that egg was not viable, too long between laying and any sign of hatching. If the second egg had hatched successfully, that chick would have been at least a week younger. Sad, yes, but it happens. So thankful we have a healthy owlet to observe! :))

Yesterday was a hard watching day. Something seemed off with egg even before that incident. No way of knowing if something happened before that incident to hatching owlet. It definitely look like it pipped the other day but no progress apparent after that. Bonnie was giving us plenty of views too. We mourn loss of unhatched owlet, but celebrate we have at least one fluff ball to watch. We all know watching live cams have highs and lows. So we celebrate the successes all the more.
