the tanuki is currently thought to be a unique sub species of the Asian racoon dog species. more closely related to the dog and fox then the Americans racoon. the traditional habitat of the racoon dog ranges from parts of western Russia, Korea and China. ( apparently in Korea they are called neoguri ) the Racoon is it's own creature though is likely closer to things like ringtail cats and other creatures once thought to be part of the lemur families which they seem to no longer be ^_^ ( edit) the maneki-neko is Japenese a 15th century legend if national geographic is to be believed about a cat beckoning a feudal lord into the safety of a temple and out of a thunder storm. In thanks the lord refurbished the temple which is said to receive statues to this day.

I love the beckoning dog set. If I was able to get them here in the States, the only one I would want is the beagle because I had a female beagle named Chloe and it looks like her.
