Luxembourg becomes first country to make public transportation free

Luxembourg abolished fares for trains, trams and buses on Saturday in what the government said was a bid to tackle road congestion and pollution, as well as supporting individuals with lower incomes.

Over 214,000 individuals travel in for work every day from Germany, Belgium and France, causing heavy traffic jams as the majority of workers commute by car. To cope with the many commuters, Luxembourg planned to invest 3.9 billion euros in railways from 2018-2028.

If people are serious being environmentally conscious, this makes perfect sense. Getting city drivers off the roads. This would help a lot. Might even help make city life more affordable for the middle class. Make the biggest carbon producers pay for some of it at the same time.

In Scotland public transport is free for seniors and soon to be for everyone 18 years and under.
I think it would be excellent if transport was free for all of us.
It’s a wonderful idea to lower global carbon emissions too.

This is how you can save the world from pollution rather then making us pay big taxes...

Taxpayers pay for roads and maintenance. It's a great idea.

Anytime I hear *Free* I usually look for the fine print of who's picking up the tab. Nothing is usually ever truly free.

I used to live in Luxembourg and I have to say that the tram is quite clean and efficient.

Luxembourg is so small and so rich that I'm sure it can work there.

Keep in mind their population is of 600, 000, meaning the quantity of users must not be very high to begin with, making it possible to do this once you have high tax rates. Let's not forget the basic facts.

There isn't such a thing as free. There is only taxpayers money.

So who picks up the lost revenue?
You know that Public transit workers get paid pretty good.
I guess it's the taxpayers get stuck with higher taxes.

What tax rate does this country have and how does the driver of the bus and the motorman get paid or even the mechanics. Like the privacy of my car.

free for the users, everyone else is paying for it!!! remember, just because you don't pay for it, doesn't mean that is free, nothing is free.
