Actually, with chickens, it is a trait of certain individuals. This also can happen to pulleys that just start to lay eggs becoming a hen. Chickens will also recycle eggs once they’re cracked and broken. Most alarming is that it seems to have been bred into our chickens to be this careless. Broody hens, are very careful with her eggs, and will often hide them. They will steal eggs from other chickens. This tree takes the chicken away from laying eggs. This is why certain breeds have been bred not to go broody. This is our doing. I had one production chicken who was like this. It was a rescue.

Normal chickens, will recycle broken eggs. Unfortunately periodically it does happen where they become addicted to their own eggs. When this happens, they become soup, only if they’re kept in battery cages, is this not a problem. But free range, and farm chickens this is a very undesirable trait I cannot be passed on or tolerated. I will repeat for the third time, we have bread our girls to lay eggs, not be interested in sitting on the eggs, not to care about the eggs, therefore we have done this.

I also have 2 girls who are determined to have chicks. They have even teamed up on one nest sitting on over 20 eggs between them. One would eat, come back and then the other one would go and eat. They were the best mama hens you could ever dream of. This type of hen is highly undesirable for the chicken industry.

Chickens does care for their eggs and defend furiously the hatchlings and help them foraging for food.
Even those factory farming breeds do lay their eggs in well established nest (if they are not in cages) despite they don't incubate their eggs.
