Chronic pain after hernia repair is, unfortunately, a significant problem for a small minority of patients after groin surgery. This video highlights the causes, diagnosis, and treatment of chronic pain after groin hernia surgery.
This afflicts between 1-3% of patients who undergo repair of groin hernia. This is a small number but given the frequency of the procedures performed, a substantial number of patients may suffer consequently. This video outlines a logical approach of investigating and treating such patients.

I've read articles claiming the chronic pain rate is more like 15%.

That’s exactly what my symptoms are and now I’m convinced I have nerve damage, thanks for this video 🙏🏼
I was looking everywhere in the Inter for information and I found this the best information of chronic pain after a hernia repair

This is very interesting. I had a triple hernia repair in 2014 with mesh. 2 inguinal & 1 umbilical. I have suffered chronic pain in right groin and testicle for a few years now which can be debilitating. I recently had a radical robotic Laparoscopic nephrectomy due to a 2.2kg kidney cancer. After surgery for about 2 weeks no pain in groin and only numbness in groin and right leg. No 5 weeks later and my groin pain is back and is worse than the recovering pain. I have a surgery and cancer review in a few days. I'm going to mention it to the specialist. I hope they can do something because it's debilitating, hard to walk or work, nauseous. Worse of all its depressing.

My inguinial mesh hernia repair failed around 3 years after the procedure and started causing occasional pain that I dismissed as scar tissue irritation for about 5-6 more years until recently were I would get increasing pain and eventually what I would describe what felt like I was being tazed and stabbed in my lower back on the side of the repair (my hernia reoccurred and was bulging 11mm).. That was the last straw, went in and had it re-repared yesterday and I'm hopeing the crazy back/nerve pain will go with it.

I injured myself every early in my recovery period and have had chronic pain for over 14mths it's locally around the mesh area. this is nothing i have ever experienced before and hope no one has to go through this life changing pain I hope there are more accurate ways to find the problem I have had an MRI put didn't come back with any obvious complications which I was relived but still shocked at the same time because I thought surely they would find something 🤷‍♂

I had robotic right inguinal and umbilical hernia repair 20 months ago. The surgery was extremely painful despite the surgeon telling me it wouldn’t be. A day later my right thigh began to burn and got progressively worse. The surgeon said my lateral cutaneous nerve was irritated and he prescribed me Gabapentin. The medication had no affect. A month later I was sitting on my porch for approximately 30 minutes. I got up and took like ten steps before started experiencing severe pain running down my right leg. It felt like I was being stung by bees on steroids. Well I ended up on the ground with my right knee under me and I ruptured my patellar tendon. My knee healed but the nerve pain got worse. I began having the same issue in my left leg 11 months after the surgery. Now they’re trying to tell me that the surgery didn’t cause my condition.

Had tingling and sharp pain in testicles for 5 months, got inguinal hernia surgery bilaterally. 3 months later no tingling but still stuck with sharp intermittent pain in the testicles at 22 years old. Hardest thing I’ve been through.

I been looking for this type of information, for the longest I had an inguinal surgery 3 months ago since after surgery I have felt very bad it took me like a month just to walk and I have told my doctor that since the first visit my symptoms, were my left leg was hurting and I felted num, I been having to this point 4 month know still hurting know I feel like something is scratching inside of me and also all the way my rib cage hurts sometimes, so I told her on my last visit and I could see she didn’t really believe me. They already did the CT scans and other things but she said everything was good, but I feel inside of me I’m not good.

I had an open inguinal hernia repair with mesh done 15 years ago and 2 years ago got the small fatty tissue recurrence. Had it "fixed" 3 months ago using the TAPP method with mesh again. Unfortunately surgeon screwed it up, just placed the mesh, saying he did not see anything else, and left (or did not repair at all) this fat tissue/lipoma in the inguinal canal and it's still there. Size of about 1-2 cm, defect ca. 1 cm, confirmed by 2 U/S and CT post surgery. Its been 3 moths, now I have burning pain in mons pubis and sometimes up along the gron to the oblique abdominal, also some pain above the whole mesh area (10x15cm). What would you recommend to do now? Another surgeon is proposing open revision, fixing the small hernia/lipoma and freeing-up the nerves. Shall I go for it? I'm from Poland, not many dedicated hernia specialist here, just general surgeons. I would wholeheartedly appreciate your view on it. Thank you!

Hello. Would the surgery doctor know if they cut a nerve or any other seemingly minute error done? Thank you.

I am 46 days post open inguinal hernia repair and have intermittent sharp pain along my genitofemoral nerve mostly in my scrotum and testicle but radiates to lower back. It is improving only 5% per week and I'm restricted from any physical exertions on my right side for fear of triggering a 7 hour pain period in my scrotum and testicle. I have partial loss of sensation on and around the incision site but not elsewhere. Hernia recurrence has been excluded and scrotal ultrasound was ok. Can such cases recover without intervention or will likely require invasive procedure?

I am experiencing severe burning groin pain directly after my c section. The surgeon said the mesh will dissolve. Should I wait to see if that lessens my pain in a month or so? I am nearly bedridden at this point so I’m desperate to find an answer faster than later.
