If I forget someone's name, I say,
"What's your name?"
They say their name and I say,
"No, I meant your last name."
Because then they aren't offended because they think you remember their name and you get both first and last names.

Secret tip: Don't be scared to ask for their name again.

Another tip: when you forget their name, you can ask them in a roundabout way!

Ex:
"What's your name again?"
"Rose...?"
"Oh, I meant your /last/ name."
"Ah. It's Potter."

Hehe. That way, you can get their name again without looking like you forgot!

My college roommate introduced himself as "Hey, I'm Christian and I like to party. I don't really like to party, but I feel like this whole explanation will make it easier to remember me."

It definitely worked.

I usually just say "What's your name again? I forgot" :b Than they tell me, we laugh a little.. And our friendship is effectively ruined

I'd say the "Repeat saying the name" thing works, I work at a McDonalds where it's made a point to repeat things you need to do to make sure you remember them and it does help.

they will be asked for their name and it will be on the cup

If it's a social setting, I usually repeat their name "Nice to meet you I then follow that up with "FYI, I'm terrible with names, and there's a good chance I'm going to forget it, I'm not trying to be rude, I'm better with faces."  They usually follow that with "Oh my God, me too."  Then I don't feel bad when I make them repeat it a few minutes later.  9 times out of 10, I have to repeat mine as well.  Usually by the second time it sticks cause I'm not thinking about having to introduce myself and I can focus on their name.

imo the best thing to do is repeat their name right after they introduced themselves.
So: "Hi my name is Schmerkteldorf" "I'm Kutzlibchen" "Kutzlibchen" and maybe point at them or re-shake their hands along with it.

I've seen people do this often and it's really helpful because
1. You have to focus on their name when they say it the first time
2. You'll create muscle memory
3. You'll also further enhance the auditive memory
4. You'll have checked if you even heard it right in the fist place (getting somebody's name wrong can be just as awkward as not remembering it at all)
5. It will give the person you're speaking with a good feeling, like, hey they actually cared and listened to me

I usually remember faces, not names.

Every time I present myself to a new person, I also repeat their name as well, both as a way to confirm I got their name right, and to remind myself of it straight away.

Yea the first two are what I started doing and I remember names WAAAY better than I used to. I often have to ask people to repeat their name, because I forget to listen, but then I say their name back to them, like 'pleased to meet you NAME'.

Just that alone helps me remember names 50-75% of the time when I used to forget them 95% of the time.

"O god i'm terrible with names, what's your name again?"

Is usually how i do it. I pretty much assume everyone has the same problem so no1 should ever get fussy about it if someone forgets. If they do, you don't want to remember them to begin with.
