As i always write, Naka Sensei IS the FUTURE of the Traditional Shotokan Karate ... He keeps the original Spirit of Budo BUT also continuously develops and updates a "modern" and effective technique ... As it should be, indeed, Funakoshi Sensei always highlighted the importance of an "evolution" ! It's a shame that we can't get a chance to see him in my country (Italy) ...

This is a high level video by a great teacher. Decades ago, when I was young, I used to subtlely create openings for my opponent on purpose. Then, when my opponent started to attack my opening, I would counter attack before his attack was effective. They thought I was very very fast, but really they were just attacking where I wanted them to attack. Naka Sensei has good explanations here and most of the translations are clear. His explanation of why a “stretched out” body doesn’t deliver an effective attack is very true, but not widely understood in my view. I also liked his explanation of the difference between Ippon and Wazari. Even though I’m not a member of the JKA (I’ve been a member of the SKA, Shotokan Karate of America, for over 50 years.) I support most everything he presented here.

This I Feel, this should NOT be free on youtube. These are gems. Please everyone make some sort of contribution to this channel. Naka Sensei is letting his soul go; as a Gongfu teacher I understand and can see that. Dont take this information for granted. It can make you a champion applying these principles and mastering them

Such an informative video. For 55 years, I (and most of the American judges) have always understood that "Ippon" was a full point and "Wazari" was a half point. I like Naka Sensei's explanation that anything less than perfect can only be wazari. Also, when he states that sen-, go-, and tai-no-sen were all one, my mind said "Ahh!" I'll be watching this video a few more times!

Thanks for putting close captions in English. It was a great lesson and the continuous Kumite with the infighting was fun to watch. I've not seen too many JKA people fight that way even though I started in Shotokan in 1980 before moving on to other styles. I love watching sparring footage of different styles. He seems to have adopted a more fluid execution influenced by his forays into Okinawa and China than the typical JKA masters we used to see.

Exactly, Master Tatsuya Naka: Distance, Angles and Timing are the three- in-one essences of good Kumite. Congratrulations, good health and many, many good students! Paul, 66, retired instructor of Karate

I am learning on my own Hapkido and I approach an opponent in the same manner. Circle away from the round house kicking leg and immediately attack the throat, ribs, or knee. Martial arts is for my defense of a stranger entering my house so, immediately immobilizing the threat is my goal. Great video Sensei!

As always, great instruction. Also, the ability to re-run parts of the video is key - trying to see what Naka Sensei is doing can be hard - he is so fast!

This is so natural and logical, and yet I wasn't aware of this kind of trick. Arigato gozaimashita, Naka-sensei.

The criteria are the same all over the world. In every rule's handbook is written that techniques must show an effective potential, punch can don't touch jodan targets but arms cannot be full straight, just like Naka sensei shown.
In any waza ari/ippon tournament the main purpose for both athletes and referees is to score an ippon. Ippon is made by several parameters or criteria; good form, attitude, distance, timing, zanshin and/or more. If all of them are respected, score is ippon. If one is missing score goes down in waza ari. If at least 2 are missing there is no score.

A great insight from Naka Sensei, and the execution of these ideas were fantastic.

I like sensei Naka´s movies and his real training. He is incredible.
I wish to have him as my sensei. But I am implanted with an ICD, so I am not allowed to learn karate.

OSS Sensei, I am/was green obi 6 kyu traditional Shotokan 1984, so now only white obi 9 kyu.
Pre warm up in front of your opponent making it look like the most likely technique you intend to use, your opponent might be thinking of ways to respond or attack, the small advantage of this might sometimes be enough to lure the opponent into deliberate mistakes
.your own reflexes are a major player and this can make more room for you,
