Things to know about C section recovery
1. Vaginal bleeding will be present
• Even though you haven’t delivered vaginaly, you will still experience vaginal bleeding for 4-6 weeks after birth as body sheds lochia ( made up of mucus, uterine tissues,blood)
2. Supportive underware
• Use supportive underwear to gently support your belly and comfortably fit which is clear from your incision to prevent rubbing, irritation over the site.
• Looks for underwear which can fit maternity pads and have compression to reduce swelling and support the incision site.
3. Movement
• Gentle walking can improve your recovery.
• You can do light walking as soon as you feel you are ready for few minutes at a time with frequent rest.
• Move more around the house once discharged from the hospital
4. Breast feeding
• Focus on feeding position to keep the pressure off the incision, like side lying, food ball hold.
• Your recovering abdominal muscles will be sore so be gentle and minimize the use of your abs.
• Frequent feeding is recommended for better milk production.
5. First poop
• Pain medication can cause constipation so it is beneficial to get off pain medicines once you feel better
• Moving helps to improve the bowel movements.
• Stay hydrated and eat fiber rich foods
• Gently exhale to relive the stress as you poop and support your incision gently
6. Scar care
• Keep your surgical site dry and clean
• Oozing, excessive redness, swelling and offensive smell can be early signs of infection. Observe your wound carefully
7. Body mechanics
• Support abdomen whenever required. Support with pillow when you sneeze, cough or blow nose
• Logroll out of bed
