I am almost 66 years old and I recently asked a friend of mine why I get ticked off so easily. Most of the time I am mild-mannered so I don’t like it when I get like that. She told me “lower your expectations.” Wow. It works! Now, when I start to feel ticked off I remind myself to lower my expectations because my anger is coming from my expecting something to go a certain way and it doesn’t. This could be about a person, my car, my laptop, you name it. Lowering my expectations about an outcome reminds me that I am not in control of the universe. LOL.

You can look at how to practice mindfulness. You have to be able to put out a psychological stop when you realize your emotions are becoming intense, and you can choose to be in control of yourself instead of letting your emotions take over.

Men and woman. I grew up with my dad being very short tempered and it’s something I struggle with too. But I want to change that and have come a long way.

Just wanted to say here that in another video you gave wisdom to a young man dealing with a horrible abusive past. By explaining that he would inevitably experience bouts of rage, you gave him permission to own the narrative of his story. This whole time having walked an identical road as he is, I thought my anger was my issue. Now realizing it was just a stage of healing. Never having previously been short tempered I was relieved to know the bouts of anger have been all the junk coming out. Not something predominately wrong with me. Thank you for your content. I'm learning so much about what healthy should look like. <3

While anger does not necessarily run in families, depression does, and depression in men tends to manifest as anger and irritability. I read that somewhere...

My temper is so bad I have to be by myself most of the time. It’s like I black out and then when it’s over I realize what I did and feel sorry about it.

I would love to hear Dr. Delonys thoughts and opinions on higher education and why he left.

This is something I have struggled with. I also had a father with a bad temper that lashed out (shocker). I am doing much better know though because it was screwing up my mairrage and I saw how destructive it was.

How many of us are guilty. We have a hard time forgiving ourselves and saying the worst things about ourselves:( but John is so right I would never say anything that would hurt someone else self esteem

Clint isn't wrong; he was taught how to behave this way, and he NEVER LEARNED how to deal with negative emotions. I treat young children, and in addition to therapy, I teach parents how to develop self-regulation in their own young children. It isn't something I can do in weekly sessions. They have to be the change agent. A lot harder when you are an adult. EVEN IF YOU ARE MENTALLY ILL, you can learn how to handle your behavior. And, BTW, as an adult, he is going to have to accept that his father isn't there for him the way he wants it to be. You don't yell back if you want to make a point. You get super-quiet and lower your voice. You hit them hard, with "You have disappointed me and my child. I thought you were better than that".

I wish to God my husband would have made the choice to stop the temper tantrums. He controlled it in front of everyone except me.

You know you're living a different life when you eat a bunch of cookies and then the next one morning wake up and say, "woo! I really partied last night!"

I'm from a Southern family where the men have legendary tempers. The women do too, we're just trained hard from the start that it's unacceptable to show them. We learn to swallow them and carry toxic loads of resentment around.

if you believe in God, you can pray for help with your temper.

Children are a reflection of their parents.
Someday, a bigger and badder "wall" will cure you of your temper.

I live over 2000 miles away from my parents. My mother, sister and brother came out to visit me once in my lifetime. My father never came out to visit me. I've always gone to visit with them, especially after my son was born. Not everyone has the "perfect" life.

He doesn't visit because its not important accept that grandfather's loss
