Where I grew up a maul was any tool you swung with both hands downwards from over your head. Never heard bettle until youtube.

My favorite was a repair shop I hung out in while working on a book about crawfish boats: they called hammers "hitters" ... cause you hit things with it. (They were also fond of saying they were "retiring" whenever they had to put wheels back on tractors.) There's just so much good humor in a well-run shop.

Pretty sure the correct nomenclature would refere to that as a Bonk-Stick.

Preach it brother preach it. You got to love it when someone thinks there's only one name for particular object.

I remember seeing a group of campers with one of those giant mallets. They just called it “the big one”, it weighed about 4 kilograms, and they used it as a one hit wonder for driving tent pegs

To me, they are all molly whoppers. Or the "troubleshooter" if I'm dealing with a frustrating electrical issue.

I have one, I call it Steve - just to hear peoples face contort in confusion

That thing you call a "Beetle" would be known as a "Persuader" around here

I have never heard anything other than a long 2-handed mallet-like tool or weapon be called a maul. That would definitely be some type of club or mallet to me.

Fro club sounds like a nightlife establishment that you can only enter with a specific hair style

My Boy Scout troop calls those bam bams and that’s what we use them for.

English is my second language. I have always come across maul as a verb. Never even knew of it has a noun form. Good to know there is something called a maul. Now I understand the origin of maul as a verb. Got to love YouTube. You learn something new everyday.

Where I grew up I didn’t call these things anything as I didn’t know they existed.

This is such a mood. Like people think language is fixed, but it evolves and changes, so different locales and regions may have their own terms for it. Simplest way is how the “gray” has two spellings from British English and American English. It will keep changing, and everyone will have their own terms for it. I love it

Where i grew up, we called a maul a large, spiked warhammer. I grew up playing dnd lol

A maul is ALSO a heavy axe, but a maul as you showed in the previous short has also been around for a long time. The name covers both.

That thing you call a beetle I would call the Sledge-O-Matic. I call an axe splitter thing a maul, and you can call your club anything you want if you are within range holding it 😅

Growing what Maul was to me and a couple of friends, was a Sith apprentice. One of my favourite characters in Star Wars, Darth Maul.
I use a banana with a chisel to carve out wood. You know, hammering a banana with a chisel...

That looks likes some excellent clue-sticks!

THANK YOU for clarifying that axe wasn’t a maul. You made the pedantic in me (which is basically all of me) so very happy.
