Hey Chuck just a question to clarify - why do you advise singers to raise the key when they strain? I thought they should lower the key to make the high notes easier?

But the thing is - if she sang in mix or head voice instead of pulling chest it wouldn't sound the same - it wouldn't be the voice that made Adele popular. Perhaps that strained sound is int a nutshell part of the recipe for the way she communicates emotions in her singing. Perhaps we can relate to the pain and anger in her voice because it's literally painful to sing?
There are tons of singers out there with a perfect technique - but I rarely hear any singers being able to communicate emotional tension without a bit of physical tension present in the voice...

Chuck, I'm so cognizant of keeping narrow and not splatting vowels because of the rich focused tone that comes in. But it's counterintuitive. You have to make it a habit. It took me a long time.

Good evening, Ive been doing the PC HL exercises from your website via the download. However I feel therea about 2 or 3 notes at the highest point It is absolutely impossible to hit without cracking(im doing it at low volume like you reccomend). what should I do about this? Im really focusing on not straining as well

Adele's issues are many fold - poor maintenance, poor live technique and poor health habits. Her backstage rider for 2016 is a recipe for disaster for a singer - milk, orange juice, chocolate candy bars and cigarettes - every show night. Eek!

To have this happen twice in 6 years means she obviously didn't learn from the first nodule surgery and just went right back to the old habits that created the first vocal issue. The arrogance of youth thinking one is indestructible is my guess. And her tour shows were every 3 days which means she had 2 days of recovery between shows - this shouldn't happen at age 29. There were guys in metal bands in the 80s who ate nothing but McDonalds - while doing drugs every day - who didn't develop nodules.

A shame at such a young age.
