This is pretty exciting for people who understand the value of science. Teams led by Andrea Ghez and Reinhard Genzel managed to track stars orbiting around Sagittarius A*, but they couldn't image the black hole itself. Now the Event Horizon Telescope has gotten that image, and the EHT is just getting started.

Add in the data the James Webb space telescope will be bringing in soon, and we're going to have a lot more exciting astronomical advances in the coming years. Nice to have some good space news to counter all the bleah terrestrial news.

God I hope there’s life out there somewhere because I would hate to think that were the only people in the universe if so we’re doomed

Going back to 1400? You’ll be there in a few years with this GOP...

This is fantastic. I was in awe. When I told a couple of my (not too bright pals) about this, I got, "Star Trek has talked about that for years". I really need new pals.

Sometimes I wonder if stars are just holes poked in the lid so we can breathe. 🤔

Maybe that's where the "election was stolen" evidence is. My Pillow Guy should send a probe to find it! 🤣

We're looking at 40-50 thousand years in the past.

Think of all the humans who will never get to see this image

Can't wait to see what other images are revealed by this amazing piece of equipment.

Does MSNBC not have an actual astronomer to bring on? There are tons of knowledgeable people that would have come on to talk about this.

Why not get an actual astronomer to report this? Cringe AF

Huge black holes may be at the center of all galaxies.

Imagine the universe as a taut piece of fabric; just to the point that it is not stretched. Now imagine placing spherical objects on that piece of fabric. What you might expect now is that the spherical objects will start to roll towards the center of the net. This is the stretching of space-time. This analogy is essentially what Einstein’s general theory of relativity is. Space is as such; “a piece of fabric woven together with with time.” Basically our universe is not a flat 2-D plane, but rather a 3-D array of matrices. The greater the gravitational force of an object is, then the further the fabric of the universe is stretched in a particular region.

This is so cool but it gives me anxiety 😭

Check out Elite Dangerous, this black hole is named Sagittarius A.

Pretty bad reporting from this guy this is the supermassive black hole of Sagittarius A star which the center of our galaxy the important part to remember is that we were able to image this through the accretion disk which is a pretty major development

This is just what was released, imagine the ones that they won't ever show anyone. You think that's the best resolution they can get off that thing? Not a chance.

"warping of speed and time" -- LOL. No., A bending of spacetime.

For some reason when I saw this on my local news it said "Milky Way black hole" and my brain didn't read the Way part and it made it kinda funny.
