SUMMER LAMBING DIARIES 9 ~ TWO devastating losses, but ONE much needed win.

Guys... we've made it to the reprieve! Meaning the little break between lambing cycles.
However, the work is never done.

This is such an important time to keep an eye on the lambs to make sure none go backwards.
In our case, I've been nursing a couple rescue lambs over the last few days and I ended up losing them both.
However, we DID manage to save a little one in the nick of time!!

Out on the land, Mark's been busy wrapping up manure, planting cover crops and helping me with our FINAL cut of hay for 2024...
We're tired, but can see the light at the end of the tunnel.

To the “you’re doing it different so it must be wrong” crowd:

I’m a neonatal intensive care nurse. I often explain to families that a lot of the cares we do might look slightly different from nurse to nurse, but nursing is kinda like making chocolate chip cookies. There are a hundred different recipes out there and just as many ways to make them, but as long as you have a chocolate chip cookie at the end that’s all that matters.

I’d imagine farming is much the same way. Different isn’t wrong, it’s just different.

I have three healthy adult cats (2 years old) because of you! My neighbor gave me some really sick infant kittens, and they were seriously fading fast. Wouldn't drink were lethargic, but I knew from watching you, that they were most likely cold. Warmed them up and they drank, and started moving around. I received vets instructions after that, but in that moment all I had was information you gave me. Don’t sell yourself short, I seriously believe Beans, Dotty, and Little Man are alive because of you.

Sandi putting the lamb unable to walk down was giving it mercy. It had zero quality of life. Those choices are hard.

It's heartbreaking to lose them, but seeing just one survivor is heartwarming. Growing up on a farm we learned during birthing season that we could only do our best. At the end of season we always thanked the lord.

Your little starving rescue lamb is a perfect example of why your numbers on the ewes and lambs are so important. You wouldn't have been able to find the twin before it was dangerously late without them

Sandi, your interaction with each lamb is so precious! You greet each one from the moment they are born with a cheerful "hello" and a loving smile. You are so kind and gentle, you are THE PERFECT PERSON to be lambing. Whatever it is you are doing, from bottle feeding, wrapping broken limbs, warming up cold lambs, to cooling overheated ones, giving dextrose, clearing out airways, helping moms with delivery, etc...we ALL know that you have the lamb's BEST interest at heart. Please do not listen to unhappy people. You are doing a stellar job with over 1.14 million subs who love and support you! The little lambs are so blessed to be greeted by such a loving person when they come into this world. : )
