I was let go from the aerospace industry at 59. Was unemployed for a while. Took a lot of useless training at Workforce then one day realized I was in denial about being retired. I've been teaching STEM part-time at a Community College for 4 1/2 years now and I'm 68. It's good walking around money and I enjoy it, but would never consider making a living teaching K-12 as a profession. My students are motivated and many of them are older as well. Part of the reason I can do this is we paid off all our debts by our early 50's and stuffed our 401k's to the gills and drove 20 year-old cars through our working lives.

I started school to become a vet tech at age 60. I graduate May 2022. This year, a 70 y.o man just graduated the program! I wanted to be a vet in HS but was steered into the secretarial pool. Hated it.

Teaching k-12? My wife decided she would do that and after three months realized it was a terrible choice. Kids don't listen, are out of control, teachers are punished for trying to get kids to work on their studies, the internal politics is worse than anywhere else, it's a you stab my back I stab yours type of workplace, kids break the windows out of your car, etc. My uncle did the same and put his seven years in and couldn't wait to get out. Afterward when asked if he'd do that again he said he'd rather cut his nose off with a butter knife.

LOL, I misunderstood the title and thought this would be about careers that ONLY lasted 10 seconds. Back in the 1980's I worked at Kentucky Fried Chicken, and that career lasted slightly longer than 10 seconds, but I never went back for my 2nd shift.

Thanks for the videos!

I started as a public servant at the municipal level (student job), then made a career at provincial and federal level. Jumped to the private sector, first for a small business, then for a large corporation (5 years working min 60 h/w with no work/life balance, my most miserable years yet my most exciting). I became a consultant in my field of expertise (technical writing) at age 45. I am now 50 and consider myself to be in the best place I have never been (work/life balance, opportunities, meaning, income). Reaching 50 made me see life as a carousel of opportunities, not the other way around. I wish people could see all the skills and knowledge they possess and transform it into a rewarding occupation. 50 is young.

Health care is the most important factor to get me to 65. That worries me on the home stretch, 55-65. So I’ll need a second career that offers it.

I am glad I saw your video. I was a restaurant manager and Covid has killed the business. I was thinking of doing real estate and you confirmed my choice. I live the SF Bay Area, so it should be a good choice.

Everyone thinks they can teach because, "Hey! I went to school! I know all about it!". They find out otherwise very quickly.
Many "skills" can be learned, but people considering teaching need to understand that it's not about how "good" you are; it's about how good you are at bringing out the good in others, and doing so consistently under what can frequently be quite impossible conditions. If the voice inside you tells you after your first couple of practice teaching assignments that you don't have the temperament for it, you probably don't have the temperament for it. Spare yourself and a whole lot of other people much grief and draw the proper conclusions. If you do have the temperament, then, in the words of Chief Dan George's character Lone Watie in, "The Outlaw Josey Wales": "Endeavour to persevere!".

I'm six days short of my 64th birthday. I'm thinking about taking courses at a nearby community college to become a machinist. Currently working at a distribution center with janitorial duties. Do you think this would be a good career move?

After 50, I did three careers that I loved. I started and ran my own Private Investigation Agency/ Expert Witness /Consultant, did that for 10 years after I retired as a Federal Agent at 45 years old. Sold the company at a profit. Then became a social worker for five years. Now, I’m thinking of becoming a English as a Second Language (ESL) teacher here in Mexico where I retired.

Yes! I’m a physical therapist/Pilates instructor and over 50 and run my own business and do online classes and private training ( due to Covid) for anyone with pain issues. It’s been slow growing online since people seem scared to try exercise at home but it’s really a lot of fun and there’s lots of modifications for everyone no matter what your pain issue.

Good list! The better ones are mentioned first. A consultant and a virtual assistant sound like similar careers. The pandemic and the uncertain economy has thrown a wench in planning. You suggestions carry more weight in a stable economy.

I was a salon owner and hair stylist forever until I became sick with a rare disease. I have to work from home now because I can't be outside at all. I don't have any skills other than hair and managing. I'm over 50 and freaking out. I'm almost out of money completely.
