I was my CO's driver/bodyguard while in the Navy in the 80s. Our program had frequent visits from high-ranking political figures and DoD officials. During one particular event, I was standing by the vehicles with three other guys (2-DoD and 1-SS) and one of the DoD guys mentioned Haig. The other DoD guy asked the SS to tell his story. Briefly, here it is:
_During the Reagan assassination attempt things got rather tense at the WH. When Haig announced that he was _*_in control_*_ the SS thought it might be a _*_coup d'etat_*_ Somebody with the authority issued the order to _*_take-out_*_ Haig if he had another presser and said anything that might be construed as taking over. The guy I was talking to got the call._
Later I went to the university library and researched the issue with a particular interest in photographs of the event inthe WH. Clearly seen in the back of several pictures of Haig speaking to the press was the guy that told me the story. He was then, and still was when I knew him, on the protective detail of a very high ranking official in the Reagan administration. At the time I heard the story, that official was less than 75 feet away from me in a conference room. I met him several times.

There is a footnote in history that President Nixon and Mr. Kissinger made an unannounced trip to the PRC and re-established relations. Life is not that simple And Haig was involved.

1. The Soviet Union had approached Nixon about destroying China's research facilities. Nixon was opposed. China then allowed the US to open and operate an intelligence base at Lap Nor, China.
2. The Nixon trip was not spontaneous. Secretly, Haig made a trip to China and did a rehearsal of the proposed banquets. His reception in Shanghai was so bad, that the White House considered calling of Nixon's trip.
