Can Flowering Be A Bad Thing? No question, flowers are the most stunning parts of our garden with colors that dazzle the eyes and smells the fill the air. But in terms of growing food crops, flowers are not always a welcome sight.

In today's Quickie, we'll discuss the downside of SOME of our crops flowers (also known as "bolting"). For you lettuce, spinach, and herb growers, this is an important one!

2023 is the Year of the Garden! We deserve it after the last little while, and growing our own food and self sufficiency is just the reward we need to get back on track!

True, our cooler crops always bolt in the heat of summer. As there is nothing I can do about the weather, I just decide to enjoy Nature's show and carry on. lol

I couldn't stop my cilantro from bolting, so I harvested it for the seeds instead. Same goes for all my other cold season crops that bolt in the summer.

I just love your garden quickies!! I especially find it amusing how you are always peeking and peering through the foliage. 😅😅😅Keep up the good work!

Radish pods are edible, so you can still get a harvest after they bolt. I intentionally allow several plants to bolt. The pods are great in a salad.

Hi Jeff....it's started out as a chaotic summer in my garden and with my health. We're having too many cloudy days, hail, & heavy downpours....or...sweltering heat & humid days where the top inch of ground looks like we've had NO rain at all. The Malabar Spinach that I found at Tractor Supply has grown wonky from day 1...so I'm using it for compost instead. My Monarda plants are getting ready to bloom. The Dwarf Marigolds I planted from last season's seeds have become plants & want to bloom yet they're pretty sparse right now. I haven't seen many pollinators either...I hope it's all because of this chaotic weather.
My health is simply from last night's 6 yr. anniversary of zero REM sleep....I just learned I'm having seizures because of it. I already informed the food pantry I won't be donating produce this year unless a miracle happens. Their loss seeing as I told them someone needed to help me. Take care, ~ Covah

Jeff I really wish you’d get a hold of me. I sent you many times on the strawberry sticks 0:19 sticking out and then you get new leaves on it and you said to wait until you see little veins sticking out. But I’ve been having nothing but death happening. I seen you put it in soil and then a different episode. You put it in water how much considered water you just laid in there or do you use string to hold it up please get a hold of me. I’m having problems. Someone next-door to me said bring it in the house and do it.

But all those flowers are fantastic food for beneficial insects! If your plants have started flowering, I hope you leave them to feed our little friends.

Thanks Jeff. I always love your garden quickies. I’m curious what kind of strawberries have those beautiful flowers?
