Move your mouth - a pronunciation tip

Here are a couple reviews from CEP students:

"This has to be one of the best (relatively) fast courses for English pronunciation I've found. Andrea has a great personality for teaching. Even though this is an online course, you'll feel there is a level of intimacy, like she is not talking to a camera, but that you're in class with her." - Horacio

"Really, this course is amazing. Very useful for English learners. Finally, I could understand English sounds." - Antonio

This video is years old and you probably forgot that you even made it at this point, lol…but I just want you to know that this is really really helpful to a lot of us, this is kind of life changing actually, I never even realized the main reason I sound so monotone and bland when I speak is because my upper lip isn’t moving at all. My voice sounds so much livelier when I’m moving my mouth. Huge thank you!

I dont know how you move with your lips in a irregular way, up and down, getting out lips, Its very trick because in our language we dont move so much lips and mouth

Ohh I understand! Basically don't use your first language tactic accent speaking to learn new languages. I'm tying to learn Italian for a second language but cant find how the way they move their tongue, lips etc. I try to observe their mouth when speaking but it's a little little difficult.

Thanks so much. I gotta ask though how are you recording this video? Like everything in the background is shaking. But you are not.

I’m Australian and I’ve realised I barely move my mouth when I’m speaking. Just seen myself in videos. How the heck do I fix this?

Well, different languages condition people to move their muscles differently, so telling people to "move their mouth more" can do more harm than good if you're not careful. In Spanish for example, the lips and tongue are a lot more active, so if you tell a Spanish speaker to move their mouth more, it's just going to make them exaggerate everything (inadvertently emphasizing their accent even more). In English the movement seems to be more from the jaw, simply going up and down, while the lips stay relaxed. Of course, there's truth to this tip, but I think it's crucial to mention the practical details. Otherwise it could be mostly counterproductive!
