I, for one, adore the over-the-top golden coloring in Rivendell. It might be my nostalgia, but... Rivendell is supposed to be the coolest place in the world that isn't Valinor, and it's supposed to FEEL magical, and the unnatural golden light just brings it all home for me.

Regardless - you're doing god's work, thank you so much :)

i am glad that somebody besides me noticed the weird colour grading. and I'm so glad that Chris hartwell is the one to revisit the changes – i cant imagine it being in better hands. I can't wait to reexperience these films the way they looked on the big screen when I saw them as a kid.

I want to rewatch all these movies in your colour grade because they look surprisingly better than the extended edition colour grade

The latest Remastered 15 disc Blu-Ray Trilogy of the Lord of the Rings Extended Editions has proper color range. The box cover has a black and grey map background with portion of the ring with glowing lettering. The top of the box has a gold banner with REMASTERED BLU-RAY TRILOGY in silver. The 15 disc set contains 3 blue storage cases with 5 discs in each. 6 Blu-Rays for 3 films and 9 DVDs of extras.
No greenish grey tint in the Fellowship of the Ring. Beautiful white clouds and snow as seen by the human eye when sunlight is broken down into all visible colors and scattered in multiple directions.

It's crazy how a simple color grade change the mood of a scene.

I'm so glad someone is on my side with the color grading! I was beginning work on a video talking about it soon, especially with the 4k transfers of the film being released. The extended editions were mostly easy to ignore but some of the 4k grading, Jackson has said recently, was to make the LOTR films look more like The Hobbit films, so that they look like they were all shot at the same time. I'm sorry, what!?

Ah you legend, thank you so much for doing this for our community! =D
I did notice something was off when I watched the extended editions, and your grading is just the perfect mix of both worlds!

I really don't care which one looks better, I just want to watch the same version I did growing up because that's how I remember it looking

Other important thing to point out, the "theatrical grade" blu-ray isn't actually the colors seen in theaters. Even the theatrical Blu-Rays alter the original grading, just not quite as significantly as the Extended Blu-Rays. So the first DVDs and 4Ks, being partially scanned from the original negative in the latter instance, are ironically the closest to theatrically accurate colors.

I would love to be able to pick and choose, scene by scene - maybe even shot by shot - my preferred color grading. Some scenes I prefer theatrical, others extended.

That scene swap of The Hobbit Bilbo was a great touch

Thank you for sharing!! I love films where there is as much natural light as possible, what is the point in color grading some of these scenes and giving it this blueish/greenish wash??

What’s your opinion on the colour grading of the 4K release? Seems to me like it reverted much of the greenish tint and now it’s looking much closer to the original release including great HDR/DV.

When you separate skin tone from overall color of the scene it looks odd and fishy.

I'm so pleased I don't notice the green overtones at all when i watch the actual film.

I just watched the re edit of the Hobbit trilogy twice and it was fantastic. Thank you for taking the time and doing this, now if only I could get this on disk. p.s Are you going to Re edit the Lord of the rings?

I'll stick to my extended blu-ray's, it might not be perfect but neither is the 4K version, My setup consist of a 4K Mini LED TV that does HDR10 and Dolby Vision and a Oppo 4K player and a Pioneer Elite Blu-ray player which upscales better than my 4K player
