I have always thought of odd time signatures in pulses, rather than actually counting. It's much less confusing, and much more natural that way. At least for me. Your mileage may vary.

That's always amaze me! How to feel those odd rythms and how to play them ex from sheet of music is my ultimate goal to achieve. Sometimes "simple" triplets can make me difficult!

in 5/8 or 7/8, it helps to tap quarter notes with your foot (or wave your head). Then your taps land on downbeats the first bar and on upbeats on the second bar. The whole thing resets in two bars.

It's like talking. You don't talk in 4/4 yet you have no trouble keeping your vocal rhythm steady.

Before I ever started using metronomes this was my concept of time, it feels more natural and like water when you look at it that way

I've never been able to count time. I played trumpet all the way through school - first chair between fourth grade and graduating high school - and I have _never_ been able to count time. The more I try to isolate it to a count, the more I'm usually late. But when I just _feel_ the space between beats, the pulse, as he says, between measures, I can get locked in with the beat.
That's funny. And nice to know I'm not alone.

I personally just subdivide the bars sometimes or add on an extra beat or two if the bar length is slightly more than a "standard" bar. Some really odd time signatures I just get a feel for as I play the piece

nice to hear that. The last thing I can do while I'm playing is count "metric time" or be counting beats. How can you groove while you're sitting there counting in your head?! Wild
