Amerikanen Reacts to Viral Svenska Klassiker: Swedish Fika

I watched "Swedish Fika" for the first time. Here's my reaction.

I "Ha det så kult på restaurangen" spelar en pojke in en videohälsning till sina föräldrar som verkar vara bortresta. Den verkar inte vara avsiktligt kul, men han är så hjärtlig, har ett märkligt tilltal och säger några saker på ett väldigt roligt sätt.

In Skåne we say chex since that is how it should be pronounced😎 No honestly I dont know why we say it like that but in Swedish generally the K is sometimes hard (as in kung and katt) and sometimes soft (as in kärlek and Köpenhamn) and for some reason we dont agree on this one☺️

Kex is a Swedish version of the word cakes, so pronouncing it like checks is an example of hypercorrection, where people incorrectly apply a rule (in this case that k before a soft vowel is pronounced as a fricative) because they don't know better :) Noone knows why the word was loaned in its plural form, though. Maybe as a sign that it's from English? There are more examples of this, like chips, keps (with a k!), bits

In standard Swedish (aka "rikssvenska") the rule is that K is soft before E and I (the same goes for G). I hate to admit that because I say "kex" with a hard K and not "chex" with a soft K - and I hate hearing "chex". But there is always "the exception that confirm the rule" as the saying gors. I also say "kid" (deer calfs etc) with a hard K as well and I do not know anybody that say "kille" with a soft K even though it comes from "killing" (goat calf) which ironically enough is pronounced with a soft K. So yea; "in Swedish we do a bit what we like when we like it" 😂

Jag är från Skåne med föräldrar från Stockholm och Göteborg och jag har aldrig kunnat bestämma mig för ett uttal av kex. Ett tag kallade min kompisgrupp dem för X för att undvika frågan. "Vill du ha ett X?"

There is A BIT of logic to "tjex", many words, like kyrka, kiosk, kilo etc, as well as names like Kerstin and Kjell have the "tj" pronunciation, but on the other hand words and names like kamel, kanel, komet, Karl, Kung, kapten, korpral... do not.
I don't know how far north/south/east the "tj" pronunciation goes, but it's a famous thing for the people in Gothenburg

Well, mostly ke- is pronounced tsch. Kemi, kedja, keramik and so on...therefor should kex be pronounced tschäx....but I say käx...the west coast people say tschäx.
