Good informative video! As a house framer myself, I'd suggest to anybody designing a roof system with the first method, consider the difficulty of installation with longer overhangs! I just dealt with a 2' overhang roof, and especially the corners were very difficult to tie together safely. On taller buildings where a ladder is not an option, I'd guess that 2' is the maximum overhang that can be framed from on the roof, anything more would need to be done off of ladders or a mechanical lift

I have to figure out how to do the roof overhang on the gable ends.

Thank you for this, i'm building a small 5x7 sauna, and I want to have a 3 foot overhang over the door located on the 7 foot wall, and the second example here may be the way to go. It is not clear to me how the beam supporting the rafters is attached to the wall. It looks like it is simply sitting on the six 2x studs and secured at two locations, one at the end by the door, in the end grain of the beam, and the other in the front of the building, along the side of the beam. Am I missing something? Thanks!

Excellent video. Thank you! Could either of these methods be used to right an already sagging 24" gable overhang corenr? I don't see any outlookers under my overhang. It's a 1966 ranch home which receives snow loads. The eaves are exposed. I was, alternatively, thinking of installing knee braces to lift the sagging corner. Any suggestions? Any books or other resources which may help? Your videos are excellent!

I don't trust the first example but would use the second. The second example will look ugly by it self except it's a perfect design to build a finished soffit that will look sharp but there will be a step in the soffit with this design. Nice design with the top plate extending out like that.

Ironically after years of loving overhangs in California because of shade and seasonal sun, we now have to consider how to prevent them from being heat traps and flash points during fires. Stamped galvanized panels backed by mineral wool might protect the existing wood underside. Other ideas anyone?

How far out can you go on the second method? Thanks Greg.

Minor detail, but it looks like you would likely need two trimmers in a door opening that wide.

The first design won't work. the corner has no support even with the way you drew it. The second would though as long as you follow the same Cantilever rule
