When Theoden ordered the valiant charge against the Mumakil I said to myself: "If there's one set of jewels that surpasses the three Silmarils it'd be Theoden's family jewels."

"Forth now, and fear no darkness!" is one of the best lines in the books.

There's a saying in Japanese martial arts: For the novice, there are few options. For the apprentice, there are many options. For the master, there are few options. For the riders of Rohan, there was one option.

The charge scene is the best in film history!

Theoden's speech in the RotK movie is still one of the most inspiring scenes in any movie ever.

As a young man reading tolkien's works, there was one time in particular that I felt inspired and that was with the ride of the rohirrim... It filled me with a sense of awe and wonder, what great capabilities people have when we are inspired to push back and fight. No book has quite made me feel that way since. Jr Tolkien was a real genius and he's a treasure to Western people.

I love the description of the Rohirrim pouring on to the Pelénnor. In my mind I hear the soft clipclopping of the horses’ hooves on the soil, the creaking of the riders’ leather saddles, the tinkling of the metal parts of the horses’ tack, the occasional metallic scraping of a sword. I can feel the riders’ mix of excitement and fear, the knowledge that they are about to engage on a battle with a fearsome enemy in large numbers, but upon whom they nevertheless will have the advantage of surprise as well as momentum. I can see myself as a rider in that host, excited, afraid, but determined to do my duty, with a certain serene calmness in the knowledge that I will probably die in the forthcoming charge.
And it’s all in an unnatural darkness, imposed by an evil, malicious will, until that moment there is a break of light in the darkness, the cocks crow and the King orders the charge.

They called them lesser men, but there was nothing lesser about them as they fought for others and for the world, their horses proud and noble their hearts full of valor and joy, that was their hour, their day may it be remembered forever more.

The charge at Pelennor was the best scene from any movie!

Ever!

For all time!

For all eternity!

No backsies!

Infinity + 1

Always have to appreciate the detail Tolkien puts into this scene. Every word paints such a vivid picture in the mind that’s nothing short of beauty.

Men facing their end, defending their lands, lives, and honor, to the last... reminds me of 'Horatius at the Bridge':

Then out spoke brave Horatius, the Captain of the Gate:
"To every man upon this earth, death cometh soon or late;
And how can man die better than facing fearful odds,
For the ashes of his fathers, and the temples of his Gods,
-Thomas Babington Macaulay, Lays of Ancient Rome

As I watch current events upon both sides of the pond, I believe the West is not dead quite yet and...
Just might be ascendent again.

The battle of the Pelennor Fields is a glorious battle but also one of sadness and grief

That speech always gives me chills. One of the best speeches ever said. In fantasy and reality.

I can no longer think of this moment without hearing Howard Shore's incredible music from the film version in my head. Somehow it made a moving scene soul-stirring.

Just wanna put it out there. It’s been a pretty rough few months and this post has literally lifted my spirits in a way that nothing else really has. As nerdy as It sounds this has kept me in the light, While I tried to fear no man.

Theoden's speech and mighty charge of the men of Rohan was truly inspiring
In the film is was pretty damn amazing
In the radio series this was pretty damn amazing
In the amazing words of the unsurpassed JRR Tolkien, this comes to life like the best literature you'll ever read
Mighty scene indeed and read by Yoysten; perfection
My favourite section in all of Tolkien's brilliant writing - so many but this tops them all
