'The Sea Hawk' A Tribute (1940)

Pretty much what the title says. A childhood film of mine and all time favorite film of the genre and few rank so high. Flynn at his very best, in my opinion. Coupled with a beautiful score by the legendary Erich Krongold, everyone should see it at least once.

Just wanted to comment again about certain aspects of 'The Sea Hawk'.  I appreciated that the film showed death in a very matter of fact way (Thorpe's crewmen in the Panama jungle and on the Spanish galley): "Cross is dead, Mr. Pitt!".  It's more effective if it just happens without melodramatic buildup and if the deaths don't ultimately count for anything.  I never considered this to be a pirate film, because Thorpe always behaved very much like a captain in a navy, rather than as an independent agent.  Everything he does is with a deliberate sense of duty to 'England and the Queen' and Flynn acts, speaks and looks like a naval officer.  It's also clear that even in the two years since 'Adventures of Robin Hood' that the technical aspects of film making had progressed (especially sound).

I think this ranks behind the Flynn 'Robin Hood', although I realise it's a different type of swashbuckler, with a different feel and intention.  The production design, music and photography are stellar.  The roving camera is highly effective (as seen in many shots in this video).  My quibbles are that Flynn is a bit too subdued, although it's a nice performance.  The plot is a little bit thin at times and the pace isn't quite what 'Captain Blood' excelled at.  Flora Robson is terrific as Queen Elizabeth and Michael Curtiz proved just how accomplished he was with this kind of film.
