My first job was as a busboy at the convention center. It was not fun being around steaming hot commercial conveyor dishwashers for hours. Learning how to stay upbeat and friendly despite the surrounding was an important lesson. Also learned that helping and doing other tasks that aren't technically part of my responsibilities was a good mentality to have, like having to help the kitchen staff by doing light line cook duties. The other guys would not voluteer so they can just relax or goof around instead. Later, the other staff would always give me unserved food and they're good food too.

2nd was doing graveyard shifts at a warehouse unloading/loading containers. Learned that there is a time to have fun and time to take safety and procedures seriously. Almost every week, someone would get injured or in trouble for goofing around, skipping steps, not paying attention, etc. One time, a trucker was really rushing me to sign off on a drop before the container was secured and inspected but when I was finally able to check it out, all the content (bread) were on the floor. As I was documenting this incident and when noone was looking, I dove into the piles of bread.

I felt shame at the time but don't at all anymore. Been in IT for 2 decades now (upto tech director level) but I have fond memories of those years. The above and other lessons really helped not just in my career but generally in life as well.
