Liz Truss new PM - what happens next?

Addressing the nation for the first time as prime minister, Liz Truss insisted that the country could "ride out the storm" caused by the energy crisis.

Before she arrived in Downing Street to make that speech, stormy weather had made her journey to and from Balmoral to metaphorically "kiss hands" with the Queen a challenge in itself.

But once she was there she claimed that although it would not be easy to deal with the "severe global headwinds" that were "holding Britain back", she was determined to deliver.

The UK continues its descent into the abyss

It's funny that Johnson complains about the rules being changed on him - given that his downfall was mainly due to his disregard for rules (including ones he himself made)...

"I will cut taxes to reward hard work"
No Liz, you will cut taxes to reward high salaries, regardless of whether they come from hard work or not. Salaries are what decides how much taxes you pay, not how hard you work.

Seems like she changes her mind to whatever current opinion will help her climb the ladder, another career politician wihtout an ounce of integrity. Brilliant.

This woman has had months to get ready … no appointments, no philosophy, no policies on emergency issue ! What did she do all summer ? Lazy like her predecessor…

Something tells me this UK government will be just as competent as the previous one😆

She will break her promises made to the public literally within one month lol. People should honestly revolt over the energy crisis given the current poor quality of life here, but most will remain apathetic.

Remember, alcohol and drugs are NOT the answer for getting us through her term as PM. Just remember, its not permanent. She will be gone before you know it. Stay strong everyone. Times will get worse and tougher because of her inaction to help, but we WILL get through this.

No improvement whatsoever. The country continues to fall into disrepair. Failure for Truss is inevitible. The Tories are entirely to blame!

The part of the speech where she said "I will reward hard work" worries me. We've all seen what the Tory definition of hard work is, a strenuous wine and cheese party amongst millionaires.

This is what happens when a country elects a government based exclusively of the "likability" of the leader of a party claiming to "get something done" when that "something" is the net most absurd, misinformed and damaging action since The Charge of the Light Brigade.

What happens next is, she makes a ton of promises and then a few months later they are forgotten.
Just like every other person before her

Her constant talk of tax cuts makes me fear that the days of a national healthcare service are numbered.

A kiwi's view: Thanks to Channel 4 for the in-depth analysis and presentation. I was born in Torquay 1938 and emigrated to NZ in 1947. I have returned to Britain every decade since 1967 cand twice in the last tn years, so have had a snap shot view of the changes. The way the Conservative Government has slowed progress is apparent. First Past the Post electoral systems in the UK and USA allied with free market principles to fund political parties have produced governments corrupted by donors. If Britain is to "unleash its potential" it will need to have governments supported by the majority of voters. Proportional Representation is necessary to arrest the decline.

Ok, for all of you English & Welsh voters, who wanted us out of the EU, we will now pay their Energy Companies, whom Tories sold off, in excess of £150 billion, and we the Tax Payers will pay over £300 billion dependant on Inflation back over 20 years

Cutting taxes does nothing for the poorest and most in need, death by a thousand cuts

CAB have been writing to Ofgem for last 10 years about serious issues with the way the energy sector is structured. Companies with humongous debts going bust and the debt being added on to our bills. All this while producers like Shell and British Gas carry on making.billions of pounds of additional profit. The system is totally geared against the ordinary person amd small businesses in favour of large corporations.
