India to have Asia's longest tunnel by 2026: Zojila Tunnel project moves ahead at full pace

Показать описание
India is all set to get Asia's longest tunnel by 2026 as work on the ambitious Zojila Tunnel project is in full swing. The 14.15-kilometer long tunnel is being built on the Srinagar-Leh national highway and is aimed at improving connectivity between the two regions. The project was launched in 2018 and is being implemented by the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL).
The Zojila Tunnel project is considered strategically important as it will provide all-weather connectivity to the Ladakh region, which is currently cut off from the rest of India for several months due to heavy snowfall. The tunnel will also help in the development of tourism and trade in the region.
The project is being constructed at an altitude of over 11,500 feet and involves cutting through hard rock, making it a challenging task. The construction work is being carried out by a joint venture of infrastructure companies including IL&FS Engineering and Construction Company Limited and SMC Infrastructures Private Limited.
According to reports, the work on the project has progressed well, with excavation work of over 1.3 km of the tunnel already completed. The excavation work is being carried out using state-of-the-art tunnel boring machines (TBMs) and the project is expected to be completed within the stipulated timeline.
The Zojila Tunnel project is part of the ambitious plan to connect Ladakh with the rest of India through a network of roads and highways. The government has already undertaken several infrastructure projects in the region, including the construction of the Atal Tunnel, which connects Manali in Himachal Pradesh with Leh in Ladakh.
The project has been welcomed by the locals, who have been demanding better connectivity to the region for a long time. The Zojila Tunnel will not only provide all-weather connectivity but will also help in the development of tourism and trade in the region, which is currently underserved due to poor infrastructure.
