Most people are aware of what the word extinction means but fewer people are aware of what the term functional extinction means. Functional extinction is a very confusing term as it essentially has 3 meanings.
Functional extinction is the extinction of a species or other taxon such that:

1. It disappears from the fossil record, or historic reports of its existence cease.

2. The reduced population no longer plays a significant role in ecosystem function.

3. The population is no longer viable. There are no individuals able to reproduce, or the small population of breeding individuals will not be able to sustain itself due to inbreeding depression and genetic drift, which leads to a loss of fitness.

In today's video i will be going through just a few animals that are functionally extinct as i will be going through 3 animals that are functionally extinct in their native habitat.

Joker: If I said that sharks are gonna be erased from existence due to sensationalistic fear-mongering, nobody panics because it's all "part of the plan". But if I said that one little old panda will die... WELL THEN EVERYONE LOSES THEIR MINDS!

Last time I was this early, the Arnie still was the dominant lifeform on this planet and wasn't bidding his time living with a British guy who makes awesome youtube vids.

I think that the Northern White Rhino is functionally Extinct as well. I think that currently there are two females and no males known.

Just imagine if we could somehow shut down all of China’s wet markets … obviously not gonna happen with how powerful of a country they’ve become but man would it be super impactful on tons of animal specie’s survival rates.

My local zoo has a big terrarium with Panamanian golden frogs. They're one of my favorite animals there 😢

What about the Vaquitas ? I don't know if they are functionally extinct but since they are the rarest animal in the world with less than 20 Vaquitas alive in the wild I think they might be functionally extinct

The irony of humans calling any other animal a "pest" seems to be completely lost on most of them.

You could have mentioned the several small tropical fish species that are pretty much extinct in the wild but bred in the aquarium hobby or axolotls

Barbary lions, from Northern Africa. They are extinct in the wild but a few still exist in captivity. There are some in a zoo in Kent, England.

Maybe I’m being ignorant but if they are just a population and not even a subspecies what makes the South China Tiger distinct at all? Like wouldn’t it be the same as any other Tiger?

For a future video please could you do a video about some wildlife conservation achievements we have had recently. It feels like there is a lot of doom and gloom with the environment and I think it would be good to do a video on more positive stuff to keep people motivated to helping the environment, still a great video btw. :)
