This happened to me. And this is why book series should have NUMBERS on their spines. It's not like it says on the cover "(book title) part two." A lot of series have completely different titles with nothing to inform the unsuspecting reader that it's part of a series.

And this is why, whenever I go to a bookstore and pick up a book I've never heard of, I open my Goodreads app to check if it's a standalone or part of a series. :)

This is why all series components should be CLEARLY MARKED with a LARGE NUMBER!

I didn't bring my phone last year on a big book sale outside my city, and gosh I bought like 17 books without knowing the sequence--I just read the synopsis and picked the ones I liked. Turned out, I bought the 2nd and 3rd books from Wicked Lovely series, 2nd book of Inkheart trilogy, 2nd book from Beautiful Creatures series, 2nd book from Wither trilogy, 3rd book from Bloodlines series, the 7th-9th books from How To Train Your Dragon, and 2nd book of The Selection series.
And most of them still store-wrapped and on perfect condition on my bookshelf
I haven't read them because the first book in these series are not on discount xD and I bought those 17 books for like 13USD (some are translated, 3 are hardcover)

One time I found this book in the library and I started reading it. It was amazing and I then I realized it was the 2nd book. And I can't find the first one anywhere besides somewhere with expensive books.

This happened to me with Harry Potter. Instead of picking up the first book, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, I accidentally started with Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, the seventh book.Within a few pages I was really lost (I was in second grade, give me a break), so I just put Harry Potter down and didn't read it until a few months ago.
Now I'm part of five different fandoms. The life of a fangirl, huh?

This happened to me too... But with the last book... I was so confused at the beginning, because the author didn't explain everything and I was like "what the fuck, what type of author doesn't explain whats happening?!" Then I realized it was the last book.... I finished it though, I did research on the first books, and yeah...

Oh man! I can relate. Once I bought a book and I didn't even know it was part of a series. I was confused by the characters relationships and there were so many events that I couldn't understand, and then one day I go to the bookstore and see that I had read the LAST book in the series. That was a dark day for me.
