I've always liked the sort of Eggman we see in Frontiers, who respects Sonic as a rival. If you're an egomaniac and someone repeatedly matches/beats you, the ONLY reasonable conclusion to is that they must be as equally impressive as you are. You can still despise them, but you can't deny their greatness without putting your own capabilities into question.

As a long time Sonic fan it’s insane to see how far Amy’s characterization has come. If this were made during the “Sonic Adventure” era Amy would have launched into a gushy rant about how amazing Sonic is- and he would have been off-put and it would have been weird. But now, she’s more like “Admiration that could turn to love” and it just makes for a better dynamic.

This is One of the Best Reasons why We All Love Amy Rose and We All have a Reason to Love Sonic as a Character that Even Knuckles, Eggman, and Shadow can't Deny it.
