Navy Is STILL Polluting Hawaii's Water Supply

Read more HERE:

"The U.S. Navy indicated on Monday that it will appeal an Emergency Order from the Hawaiʻi Department of Health to drain Red Hill fuel storage tanks, despite initially voicing public intent to partially comply with the order. These fuel tanks have poisoned the Oʻahu community for years. Deputy Secretary of Defense Kathleen Hicks announced the military’s intent to appeal just two days before the deadline to release a plan for defueling the tanks.

Many of the water protectors leading the movement to shut down Red Hill never took the Navy at face value when it initially said it would comply with the Department of Health’s order. One of the leading organizations in the movement, the Oʻahu Water Protectors, correctly referred to the Navy’s last-minute announcement as “a violent stall tactic.” Every day that jet fuel remains in the storage facility, which is located just 100 feet above a freshwater aquifer, the Oʻahu community is at risk of another leak causing irreparable damage.

Leaders of the movement have indicated that they will continue to resist the Navy as long as it takes for their demands to be met. This could be a long fight and requires our unwavering solidarity. The movement was able to build enough momentum to force the Navy to promise to follow the emergency order. The challenge the movement now faces is how to use its momentum and relationships with the community to force the Navy to follow through on any concessions it makes to the movement’s demands."

I lived on Oahu for 20 years, left in 2010. The entire infrastructure around the Pearl Harbor/Hickham base is crumbling: the homes are crumbling as well. The military doesn't give a rat's ass about military or local families 💯 Aloha

Flushing the system with fresh water, is just destroying fresh water that is gonna become a limited supply

There is literally a sheen of oil in the tap water. No matter how much flushing they do, it's going to stay. It can only stop when they shut down Red Hill.

It's not like the Navy is short on funds, but new boats are shinier.

I'm from a developing nation and stories like this always blow my mind because you can go to ANY single household in my country and drink fresh clean safe water from the tap.

This isn't even the worst thing the U.S. has done to Hawaii, its just the latest. Also, it's pronounced Ho-no-lu-lu. There is no A sound.

Where's all those 600 billions dollars military budget gone? That's a lot of money.

You know what doesn’t leak fuel into the ocean? Offshore renewable energy like wind turbines and harnessing the waves. Military should do this. They have the budget and resources

This is one of the many reasons why I'll never join or support the military

This is an on going issue for many years. It's a disgrace to many living in Hawaii. There have been many other DOD offenses on other Hawaiian Islands. This one affects so many people not just military. The potential of contamination of one third of the island of Oahu is great.

Sadly, military members cannot sue the government for things they are exposed to while in the military. Thousands of members and vets die yearly from cancer and other illnesses based on these types of exposures. Thanks for another great story.

Why fix anything when it costs too much money….
But give most of the budget to defense contractors ….
And wonder why everyone is fed up with corruption and BS.
They all know and poisoned the water.

Amy Goodman covered the Water Protectors, too. There are some people out there, trying to keep people informed.

When I went to Pearl Harbor, you could see the fuel on the water. I think it’s because no one wants to fiddle with the Arizona and Missouri because of the historical significance.

"Ka Wai Ola". Water is life. A Hawaiian saying. Native Hawaiians realize how precious our resources are in these islands. It's sad that the government and military are doing nothing to/ not enough to really remedy the situation.
