She was Asian before white and earlier concepts had her black, her color doesn’t matter.

Actually no. That has been debunked before, back when April's design in "Rise" was revealed. Even back then, it kinda sparked a bit of controversy. I had hoped that when blogger "TMNT Entity" posted their piece on the topic and included receipts with a somewhat detailed history of the character that it would put the debate to rest, but unfortunately that isn't the case.

At the risk of sounding like broken record, the TL:DR version goes; prior to debue in TMNT #2, April was conceived to be Asian but this bit of development was suspossedly abandoned when she was given her name, which she was named after Kevin Eastman's then girlfriend, April Fisher. By issue #4 April was given a makeover that featured curly hair and an inconsistant tan complexion and was given the in universe explanation that she went to a "new wave salon". By issue #28 she abandoned the look altogether. Although, she was black once durring the "guest era" of the comic's run in issue #32, but this was a non-cannonical story. The only thing that April has in common with Eastman's now ex-wife are their given names. And being named after a living person doesn't determine one's own ethnicity.

Personally, I could care less what they do going forward and will definately go see the movie when it comes out next month. What actually urks me is when something like this happens and the resulting fallout involves a bunch of chuds whining about it, followed by people taking their purity test by white knighting a character that doesn't need it by misrepresenting a source material's history. It's just another incarnation in a line of incarnations, much like the Turtles themselves.

But if you want the full story, read the aformentioned blog post by TMNT Entity and come to your own conclusion.

To be more creative they could've kept April the classic 80 disign and added a new character along side Erma, TMNT is no stranger to new characters and this could've been someone else, it just feels like they just wanted to heve her black for esg reasons and nothing more, Rise design was actually fun and creative but April's iconic design has been the 80s cartoon appearance.

April was NEVER black in the original Mirage comics. This misurestangin started because in issue 4 April went to a New Wave hair salon and got herself a perm. Since then she had that look for a couple of issues, but after issue 27, she changed to her original hair style. To add to the confussion of non readers, in issue 7 she also started taning her skin from time to time, thats why in some panels her skin has gray tones, but in others she dosent. That being said, I think they should redesign the chracter however they like, April NEVER had a consistant look in any of the many versions of the franchise, usually they make her new designs to refference her appearence in the 87 cartoon, but that is just because thats how most people remember her looking. To this day it just baffles me, how people wont accept changes of design in this franchise, theres not even a good excusse for that, remember that even back in the day a character could have many different designs, starting from the original Mirage comic, then the cartoon, then the Playmates figures, and even the Archie comics. Characters in fiction should reflect the reality of our world, and if they see fit that the character in this NEW version should be a fat, black, teenager, then that should be fine.

Dude, they have changed the Turtles designs all the time. Same with April.

In fact, the creators of the Turtles have said that they have no problems whatsoever with how they change April in any medium.

April was originally supposed to be Asian. And her name came from a black woman that one of the co-creators knew personally.

Bro, the original version of April is not black at all.

She was not mixed race… she’s white. The art from the issues you’re referring to, she had gotten a perm. She wasn’t Asian either. Nice review, though.

Also, she didn’t go back to the original. He keeps repeating that but it is flat out wrong. She was AT BEST mixed/Spanish Asian in the original comics. She was NOT a fat black girl.

I love your take on April. So sensical, rational, and real. I kind of had similar feelings when I saw the character, but you concretized those sentiments in an amazing way. Keep up the great work!

My complaint when it comes to these toys and the new movie is the simple fact they are legit teens. To me, even though Teenage is in the name, the og movie turtles strike me as being 19 at least, but give more an early 20s vibe. To me, since the 2012 series I've felt the Turtles are more children/pre-teens if anything. Silly I know

Lol “they are making April black again cause of the og comic” two seconds later “the og April was mixed”……… so which is it? Black or mixed?

The single carded release April is going to come with a computer cell phone notebook and a camera

I love this set, I bought the single carded figures and the differences I noticed were the missing weapons racks, Donny doesn’t come with his headphones in this set and my single carded Raph has an all black belt where this one has the brown pouch in front. Also, the controversy around April is stupid. Who cares what race she is, as you mentioned there is no consistency with her character, this is not the 80’s cartoon, that ship has sailed. I’m psyched to see the new movie, going in with an open mind and c’mon the voice cast is spectacular!

As always, I enjoyed this unboxing!!! Very well done! I ALSO, enjoyed your thoughts on April. I don't GAF about the change of April. Lol. She's beautiful. She's also not real. Lol! Can I just say tho, as a black woman myself...wouldn't have minded a fit and athletic Black April versus an overweight one. But, I'm not up and open arms about it. Simply a preference. Nothing more. Im also More concerned that the movie as a whole meets and or exceeds our expectations. :) Very well done. Keep pissing people off. Ur good at it. Lol. :)
