Fetal alcohol syndrome can have lifelong impacts, including mental, physical, & behavioral concerns. Fetal alcohol syndrome, or FAS, happens when a woman consumes alcohol during pregnancy and enters an unborn child's bloodstream.
Physical effects of FAS that last into adulthood often include:
- Short stature
- Small head size
- Thin upper lip
- Reduced brain size
Mental effects of FAS in adulthood include problems with decision-making and planning, attention and distraction, Learning and memory, and aggression, in addition to depression, anxiety, and obsessive-compulsive disorder.
Most adults with FAS need significant help managing housing, employment, transportation, and money. 87% of people with FAS have never had a regular job, and 60% struggle with drugs or alcohol. The most obvious way to prevent FAS is to avoid drinking alcohol while pregnant. While there is no cure for FAS, adults with FAS can receive medications, therapy, and training to manage their condition.
